Default A little help for Kenai KINGS!

Proposal 104 passed thru the Alaska Board of Fisheries over the weekend, increasing the Kenai late run king escapement (OEG now set at 15-30K) to put MORE big kings on the gravel. Restricting harvest to kings < 34 inches is now one of the in-season step-down tools available to help ADFG more consistently achieve the new goal.

BRAVO!

Nice. I don't follow the Kenai situation as closely as I should. How does this compare to previous seasons?

No retention of anything 34" or bigger takes essentially EVERY hen out of the bonkable pool of Kenai kings.

I would have preferred to put this 34" step at the top of the optimal escapement goal... no bonking any BIG fish unless we are CLEARLY going over the top of the goal, even with a fully liberalized fishery.

But incrementally moving the needle in that direction is a WIN any way you look at it. Even a marathon champion's gotta start with baby steps, so I'll take it for now.

Sockeye escapement increased and the king escapement increased. The commercial fisherman must be ******. Overescapement is a myth.

Amen. Just the very concept that anyone would think to argue there could somehow be too many fish making it to the gravel is beyond absurd ~ like how could the runs possibly have persisted throughout ancient history before humans arrived on the scene to help manage against such a threat to their continued survival?!?

Wait, that's not enough...

OK, that's better!

Writhing in agony like salted slugs. They took their fair share of hits in UCI this go'round.
