Default about done with Prineville Res for the year

Went out this afternoon and up to the no wake zone. Didn't see any fish on the fish finder. Water was all about 4' to 6 ' deep. Went back toward the old Resort and picked up a few but not much on the fish finder there either. Went to the floating toilet and fish all over the place. ended up with about 25 total. Left but was still catching them. 2 hr drive home and had to feed the dog's. But had a great time out there this year thanks to Puckfisher! Oh, all the fish were 9 1/2" to 10 1/2", lot of fun on my new ultra light rod and reel.

Might go over one last time and give it one last shot if I can still get the boat in. Guy's on crappie forum suggested either a canoe or kayak. I got a canoe. Just need a dolly with wheels to pull it with! Has me thinking! Sure like fishing for those crappie not to mention eating them!

Powder ramp might go dry before they stop letting so
Much water out. Hope not. Crappie were hot today. Guessing close to 100 in about 3 hours. Best part was the two guys that went with me took all the fish home.

Went Wednesday, Docks in at State Park & Jasper. Fish cleaning station broke... Caught fish across from Jasper point in the vicinity of the bluffs. Lots of fish above 5 MPH, just not biting... Clouds of 4" perch.. Nice size and thick fillets.

I am not familiar with Crappie life stages, so I could be really off on that ID. That being said, the coloration and body configuration was nothing at all like a crappie. Solid brassy yellow green coloration and long more slender configuration. Perhaps small mouth?? Sure was a lot of them...

I did not study them too carefully as I threw them back anxious to catch something I wanted to keep.

So, a question about crappie. I have seen posts on ifish that mention that thru the season the crappie are getting bigger. As far as I know, crappie do not die in the fall like spawning kokenee. Therefore, next spring there should be lot's f 10 1/2in fish. However, that never seems to be the case. They seem to start out small and increase in size thru the summer. Anyone have an explanation?

This batch that we are catching now. the 9-10" fish were 7-8" fish last summer. From What I read these 9-10" fish should be 3 years old. I don't know where they all came from. If they are 3 years old then that means were spawned in 2016, which was a low water year. 2017 was a full reservoir to start, then last year it again got pretty low. Had a full res this spring again. I haven't heard anyone with a theory on why there are so many all of the sudden after years (2005 was last time I caught a lot but they were the two year old 7" fish) of very low numbers. But gonna get while the gettings good. I hope these are up to 11"+ next year.

I know there are tons of baby(dime size) fry in the lake. We have caught a few trout this year while crappie fishing that were just stuffed with the little fry crappie.

When crappie hit about three years, their growth rate slows considerably. Can be as little as a half inch a year, dependent on food. That 13 incher could be six years old!

Interesting thing. Guy's on a crappie forum I'm on suggested I get a kayak. Only problem is I don't think I could sit in one for long anymore, old bones don't work right. But I do have a 16' Coleman canoe I fixed cracks in a while back I might be able to use. Put a folding lawn chair seat in it. Turned the back to the front so hopefully it won't ride so high in the front with no weight and got a cooler that fits just right in the middle that'll hold more fish than I might catch. Yea, think I'm gonna try this. Hope I don't fall in the lake!

You can still launch a normal boat. Not sure why you would hassle with a canoe when you have a more comfortable option

I wouldn't but last trip out the water was really getting low. Worried about launching now so mentioned it on a crappie forum and they suggested a kayak or canoe. Well I have a canoe and can launch it where a boat can't be launched!

Just launch at the state park. From where you are coming really isn't any more time. That launch is good down to like 25%

Prineville Res. still kicking out some nice crappie, went 10/3 and picked up 50 nice fat 10-12" fish. Was on a giant school for about an hour then left to find some bigger ones (didn't find any). Hard to stay away from all the little bass grabbing your lures. Also hooked 10 decent trout. Powder cove ramp dock was good for one boat and it looked like the water went down a foot overnight. Water was running 59-61 degrees at the surface most fish we hooked were 3-15' deep.

Headed out yesterday with my son. Seems harder and harder to get him out, always seems to have something going on. His only other two trips out to Prineville this year were early in the season and we didn't have the best luck those days. Got the stink off yesterday with around 50. Like fishin4life said some nice big fish coming over the side. Really hope I can find a few more chances to get back out there with my son.

Can you still launch a boat at the state park? I've crappie fished once in my life and would like to try again if I can get the boat in and they still bit this time of year.

Like TA showed you state park is a great ramp. Will be fine all winter. I havent winter fished for them but plan to give it a go on a nice weather day. Powder cove may even have enough water after first if the year. Fingers crossed on that.

Gorgeous afternoon at Prineville yesterday for crappie hunting. Tough to locate but found a couple huge schools in 35 foot water hovered just off the bottom. 41 degree water. Usually finding them is 90% of the problem. Well, not yesterday. They refused all my tricks. Interesting because I have caught many crappies ice fishing. Just losing my touch. A few boats trolling for trout. Water is down for sure but no problem launching at State Park. I’ll give it a couple months.

Did you try over by the old resort, usually some nice schools of larger fish.

Funny you mentioned that. I fished near Powder Cove first and Bear Creek arm. Then finished up toward upper end. I have a hump or two near old resort I like. Ran full speed into sheet of ice about 1/4 inch. I have a feeling the crappies all over that lake have lockjaw now. If you just have to go, I would locate a school and go with very light line( maybe two pound) and tiny offerings moved very slowly. I found no fish in shallow water. All were in 30-40 ft. And off bottom. I am sure they were crappies. Things are starting to freeze over out East. I am headed that way.

Took a drive around a portion of the res today. As expected powder cove was locked out. Was surprised at how much else is shut down. There are signs that Robert Bay is closed with a cable across the road. Signs at other access points as well. Really a shame its come to this.

Yep. Had a buddy try to get to Roberts Cove the other day. Just like you said, signs and then a cable. No boat. He just wanted to shore fish.

Well, that saved me a trip. Baker County pretty much shut down too. Not looking good for Crane Prairie opener.

I've been thinking of going over to check it out. Sound's like a long drive for no fishing. Also though about the park out near the resort. There's a road there that will take you out to Hwy 380 and follows the res to the beginning. Canoe on top of my PU would work if it's not wet.
