Default Hooks

Following this thread on another site and someone make's the statement that good hook's cost $4 each. Another guy say's they cost $1.50 each. This sounds to me like the shooters claim that a good scope has to cost more than the rifle! I've got a lot of hooks and so far with each type I have been able to catch fish! What can a manufacturer possibly do to a hook to make it worth $4 ea or even $1.50 each?

I don’t drink the Kool-Aid either. The most expensive hooks I buy are the Gami Big River because I fish them barbless most the time. For anything other than salmon, most any hook works for me as long it’s fairly sharp out of the package and is the correct size. It’s not rocket science and money doesn’t buy success.

What style of Gami do you use HarvZilla?
I looked at them on line. For the size I use of the bait hooks, it looks real reasonable.
Just curious.
I've used those, and Eagle Claw and Mustad. Can't remember the names of some.
They all caught fish.
Only have gotten a couple bent hooks in my lifetime.

Agreed.

I mostly use Gamakatsu because the steel they use is quite stiff so you get more strength per diameter and they seem very rust resistant. For sturgeon I buy the octopus circles and the slightly more brittle steel makes it easy to break the barb off.

This year I did buy some Eagle Claw trokar hooks for drop shotting. They work well but so did the Gamakatsus.

Even at $1.50 ea those are some spendy hooks for Panfish or Walleye. I was using cheap Brad's for Walleye but switched to Owner Cutting point with a huge increase in hook ups. I believe I pay about $.33 apiece for them at retail.
