My guess is that they have deemed the commercial fisheries essential businesses .

Here in California commercial fisherman are struggling as markets for their catch a drying up. So they can fish but not able sell much.

Why not rely solely on farm raised salmon at this point rather than allowing for commercial trollers / netters to continue at this time ? Is it because grocers receive more money for non farm raised salmon or is it to allow commercials the opportunity to continue to work ? Just wondering.

It's not going to matter in a little while...not that many people are going to be shelling out money for non-farm raised salmon, or any salmon, for that matter.

All the restaurants are closed. How much of their catch will actually be bought?

I once heard they sell salmon in grocery stores too. And, there are more than just salmon that are fished commercially. But, that all may just be propaganda created by the commercials to make themselves seem essential.

Well there are beef producers, pork producers, fowl producers and fish producers. Should we shut them all down? Sure restaurants are closed. That means we need more food in the grocery stores because everyone is cooking at home.

I understand that but don't you think it would be important for people to have the opportunity to go out and harvest their own food as well? I have a freezer full of elk meat, and I'm very happy to have that available right now. I'm sure for both mental health, as well as a good meal, many fisherman would love the opportunity to go out either by themselves in a boat, or on the bank, and harvest a fish to take home and eat....since the restaurants are closed.

Also, none of those other producers are harvesting ESA species. How about we use this opportunity and give the fish a break for once.

Hopefully if the commercials are fishing its going here And not overseas. If it's been deamed essential. Seems processers would have a difficult time.

I'm just explaining why commercial fishing is allowed now. I'm on your side about letting us fish. Had my big boat out to Prineville 4 times until they closed that. Got my small boat ready for North/South Twin and floating the river out of Slough Camp. I wasn't fast enough. They closed that. Now I'm rigging up for shore fishing at the Twin's. I checked it out last week and there was 2 people on the entire lake. I don't think me and a buddy will cause any social distancing problems.

I Comm fish for nearshore rockfish. Buyers from Seattle and SF Bay area have completely quit buying. I have one buyer from Portland, Chang Fa still buying once a week. But they have us on reduced pounds and aren't buying any Lingcod because most of their Cod sales go to restaurants. 90% of the Comm's I know aren't fishing due to lack of buying.

When I fished Thursday the 26th there were multiple sport boats fishing out of Bandon and Charleston.

No "no fishing signs" that I seen, 4 boats parked at the fish cleaning station in Charleston. Seemed like a normal day considering ocean conditions.
