Default Problems w/ "Puget Sound Herring Sales" Herring-

Purchased 1- case of reds and 1 case of greens this year from "Puget Sound Herring Sales". The stuff seems real soft and losses scales fast even when salted heavily. Anyone besides me having this problem? Spoke W/ Puget Sound Herring Sales and they said I was the only person they have heard from with this problem. Did I just get unlucky? That's the norm for me when playing lottery but not getting bait........

I'm not BASHING there bait just have questions

Thanks

I've been puching holes in the bags before unthawing. Bags do not show signs of previous unthawing. Any good ways of telling how old vac packed bait is? This stuff has white eyes and no signs of freezer burn on fins.

Thanks again

I am a rookie with regard to fishing with herring. What is the reason for punching a hole in the bag of frozen herring when thawing it? Thanks.

I'm going to give them another call on Monday and see what they have to say. Sure would help if others would call. Then it's not just one unlucky person. It's an actual problem. Hope it's ok to post these let me know if it's not and I'll remove them.

Hmmmm.... Hope it's just an isolated incident. Was considering buying a case of blue very soon. Let us know how this pans out.

Hmm, my uncle brined up some to troll around last weekend, he figured they were a little soft because he thawed them first, then brined them... maybe there's another reason. I'm not even sure they're Puget Sounders though, but I think I'll ask him! TOC

TOC might be on the right track. I've noticed that my bait stays firmer (is that a word?) if I don't thaw it before putting it in the brine. I always used to thaw it because I was afraid the scales would come off taking it out of the package, but they were always mushy.

You guys keep using that vac-pac garbage (haven't found a brand yet that I liked) I'll stick with Tom Brown's, comes out of B.C. been using it for 15 years and year after year it is always great quality bait.

Hi Kevin Good to see you are still around. Kevin, I got several cases of green and blue and all is fine.
When I do herring, I brine my herring in a vacuum canister. This really pulls in the brine and it only takes a few hours. Maybe that might help toughen them up.
Take care Kevin

Checked one of my vacuumed packed packages yesterday and they were fine. We have been buying from PSH for over 40yrs and never had a problem with their bait. Is it possible your bait could have thawed in transit? Did you pick them up in Gig Harbor yourself?

I had a pack that thwawed, but it is easy to tell due to a lot of blood being squized out herrings. Since they are vacuum packed, right?

There isn't any blood in any of my vacuum packed packages and I didn't get any after they thawed either. Also, no loose scales whatsoever. It's possible that you could get blood if the vacuum wasn't released before thawing.

FYI- I know a fair amount about herring and these had not been unthawed. They were some of the best looking herring I've had in the last 2 years. They were just really soft.

Just to let you all know it sounds like I'll be getting my money back.

vac packed herring is frozen without the vac, then after they are hard they are vaccum sealed. They will crush if they thaw prior to defrosting, thereby becoming deformed and looking nasty. The stuff I got is vac sealed, and seems to be ok, as long as I poke the bag prior to thawing it.
