Default LI Live (bait) report (updates 16:00)

Seelicious and others heading out to the spot now. Cell phone report @ 0815 choppy, wind 7 to 10, W124 21 and running west at 21 kts. More SMS reports as the day goes on.

SST shows a hard line at about the W124 50, blue water and temp break there. Maybe 60 degrees.

I pulled the plug on Saturday Garibaldi migration for Kismet. Fishing canceled due to forecast and trend. Ughh.

I figure that decision is better than trolling instead of bait drifting. That transition made on the fishing grounds with a pile of bait on board. We did that several times this summer.

Should be wide open now, you are welcome.

Thanks for the report, I am headed out of LI for tuna tomorrow, we have never fished for tuna in October before can't wait to give it a try. I will check back for updates through out the day.

We are not setup for live bait, we will be chumming dead bait and fishing swim baits and jigs, we also have the troll gear aboard, any tips for this late season newbie would be much appreciated.

Pilar, you are the man! Just out of curiosity, why did you pull the plug? Saturday looks like the wind is laying down.

Hang some dead bait under the boat while you are jigging or working the swimbaits. The dead bait will get drilled. Small live bait hooks #2-#4 tied to mono with 1/2 ounce of rubbercore sinkers or two 1/4 oz split shot. 20-40' under the boat worked good, just put the rod in the rodholder.

Same question continues to make decision making crazy hard.

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE ON THE FISHING DAY?

Cost - benefit. If the wind blows very much at all I drift at a pretty good clip. Which makes it difficult to get the fish up to the boat. When that happens I pitch bait when I hook up on the troll and do pretty good.

Bouy 46029 is showing a 10 to 15 kt wind NE right now.

Bouy 46050 is showing 5 to 10 kt S wind.

We really want the live bait deal. Turning a trip like that into another troll show because the wind is blowing is not very interesting to me. We did that already 2 or 3 times this summer.

SST shows a plankton bloom off Tillamook which is pushing west about 5 NM a day all week. Yesterday it was at W124 55 and still moving west. There is a nice break at W124 55, temp and blue water.

SST shows a 50 mile run from Newport to N45 15 by W125 to find a break to fish on. It's pretty cold SE of there in the mid 50's. The other spot at N44 30 by W125 10 is not as warm and not as sharp a break.

Those shots are yesterday so who knows. Retreat and fight another day.

Ok SMS recieved at 14:17.

It reads

"1 for 4 at the 125 10, went to 125 30."

I asked for details. Not sure if they are still hunting or returning.

125 30 ... wow. That would out past Mt Crossley.

More updates when I get them.

Thanks, sitting at the transient dock reading that report. ODF checker said some tuna guys came in for bottom fish when the warm water eluded them. Bummer, not what I wanted to hear.

Last report by cell from W124 46 line.

4 strikes one landed. They went out and down to the N45 15 by W125 30.

The line is where SST says it is but not 60 degrees. More like 58. The line is color and trash and very visible.

No Life. No Birds. Nice day included skeet layed down ocean and the trip in is at 30 kts.

The one fish was taken at W125 10. Commercial boats were observed at W125 25 trolling SW.

Bud says .... "Get this report out and same people some gas money".

Hope someone else found fish and reports it here. I'm looking tomorrow for tidewater salmon.

No fish for us. We went as far as 125 08, but stopped short of Bud's 125 30.
I wouldn't be so quick with the "fat lady". Keep in mind, the east wind may have pushed then out. Water color was good, and temp was close. Bud was in jumpers. Let's see if a west wind can revive our fishery !
