Default illegal bridge on North Santiam.

Looking at the local ads and newspaper just now.
Someone made a homemade bridge across a channel of the North Santiam.
Made of cables, ropes, aluminum ladder and pvc pipe.
It had a sign on it that said "make bridges, not bombs".
Anyone see this near Greens bridge this fall?
Apparently LEO took it down the other day, because they considered it a boating hazard, during high water conditions.
It was on private land, and the owner didn't know about it.
I'm thinking kids that didn't know any better, or someone with an illegal farm on the island, that one end was attached to.

Just to spite their sign, LEO should have called in an airstrike from the 142nd Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard based in Portland.

Think Linn county has LEO has their own air wing.
It said they took it down.
But not how.

Dave. I bet it was leading to the island and a good slamon, steelhead hole.
They said it was still a work in progress when they took it down.
Mighta left a fair to middlin' salmon hole there if they bombed it.

Speaking of bridges, the governors of Oregon and Washington have again teamed up to plan a new I-5 bridge over the Columbia. Probably cost more than this Santiam bridge.

Not to worry now. They bombed it out of existence. It won't clothesline you now.
Was looking on google maps at that area. Sure is a mess right above the forks now. Islands all over and narrow channels with lots of sweepers.
Don't remember all those when I floated it last. But has been a few years and a few dozen floods since then.

Yeah, it's pretty hairy through there. I wont float it anymore.

Looks like it's turning into a small Mekong delta.
That hole where the 2 branches meet used to be long and deep, and full of nooks.

Another bridge for I-5 over the big river?
Gonna make it 1 way for both bridges side by side, with a choke point at each end?
You bet it'll be more spensive than the middlin' sized Santiam.
But oh so much more fun to navigate to and from.

Yep. They signed a cooperative agreement to fund a study. "Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed an agreement Monday to work together to replace the Interstate 5 Bridge that connects their two states." Draft report is due out Dec 1st.

Here's a link to the story about the Santiam bridge. Looks like Whet dude has been there.

And then there is the proposed high speed (bullet) train between Vancouver, B.C. and Eugene with a cost estimate of $50B. Leaves me wondering what the ticket price would be......

Maybe we can get California to help us out. They have experience building one. Or so I've heard.

Don't need no stinkin' bullet train.
Amtrak has been good to me travelling from Salem to Seattle and back. Great prices.
Always wanted to ride it from border to border. Then coast to coast.
Love train rides.
Fastest I've ever been on was in Japan.
Telephone posts going by like a picket fence? Heck no! It was nuttin' but a blur.
And that was in the early 70's.
Just imagine now.

Rode the mag-lev from the PuDong Airport into Shanghai. 430KPH.

About that cross country AmTrak trip? We did a Salem round trip to Salt Lake City a couple years ago to a family reunion. The run between here and Sacramento was OK but the run from there to SLC on the train headed to ChiTwon was absolutely filthy and the crew surly. Not just rude, surly. I can't imagine ever setting foot on another AmTrak train.

I try not to be a troglodyte but in a perverse way I have to chuckle at the troubles CA is having......them being the leaders in the country and all. Maybe troglodyte light??

Bummer. Wazat the moonlighter?
Thought that ran from San Diego to Seattle, without changing trains.
If that pans out. Then I'll wanna do the coast to coast some day.
Sleeper cars of course.
I was pretty bummed out when I found out they ran right through a lot of the places I wanted to see, at night. Maybe a couple day lay overs to take in the scenery?
Still in the planning stage.
Kinda like the American Queen steamboat company trip up the big rivers in the future.
But they make the price of Amtrak look like paupers.

Speaking of "surly".
Riding Greyhound long haul was an experience in a coupla cases.
One particular driver guy was spoiling for a hoedown.
Just hopped on the bus headed to Potland from Salem, and he called me out for getting on without his permission. I stood up to answer, and a guy in the seat behind told me to be careful. He said the jerk had just kicked 3 people off along some back road.
Apparently the driver had been going since San Diego, and his relief driver didn't show up, halfway through.
He shouldn't even been on the road.

The Pacific something train actually wasn't too bad. Reasonably comfortable ride, reasonably clean, riders and staff reasonably friendly. It was an OK run.

Changing trains was like going third world. The couch type seats in the sightseer car was taken over by what looked and smelled like a homeless migration. The toilets had standing liquid of some kind puddled on the floor, used TP scattered about and the commode plugged but still being used. A crew member was sitting not far from there and when approached told the rider to go clean it up themself, she wasn't going to touch it. Oh, and the train broke down twice for track side repairs on the way to SLC.

I chanced to take the slow train from Hangzhou to Shanghi one time. We got on, found our seats and the train layout had opposing bench seats with a little table in the middle. People had all manner of possessions tied up in tarps and seed bags scattered about with kids playing or sleeping on them. This is where it gets good.

The guy across the table pulled out a battery powered shaver and cut the stubble on his head. On the floor he had a bag and the bag started moving! As we watched the bag it wasn't long before a rooster stuck its head out and looked around. Baldy pushed it back in the bag. It took that train around 4 hours to make the normal 1 hour journey as we stopped at every crossing and pulled over to the side to let every express train roar past. Fun trip. No A/C and it was a warm day. Kinda smelly, too.

Warm Day? No A/C. Smelly. Yea, I had that guy as a cab driver in Barcelona. Chickens would have been preferable. (Well, maybe his driving was better than a chicken's)

WOW. Wada trip.
Be glad it wasn't in India.
Reminds me of a sightseeing trip in Japan, on an ancient old steam train. In 1974.
Some sort of holiday, and all the women were dressed in what looked like geisha garb, with thick makeup and those weird wooden clogs, the whole 9 yards.
Went from Yokosuka to Hoshi, I think, where there was this huge Buddah statue of bronze looking material.
It was sitting in the middle of a huge beautifully landscaped park or garden.
But, I'm ahead of meself.
On the way there, bout an hours travel, the cars were jammed full. Like nuts to butts.
Friend and I were standing at the doors facing out, and a bunch of young geisha's were directly behind us.
One or more of them kept grabbing my rear all the way through the trip.
Every time we turned to look, we saw nuttin' but a bunch of giggling geisha's.
Once at the park and Buddah, we crossed an arched stone foot bridge over a creek, where everyone was stopping to take a sip out of a metal dipper hanging there. We passed on that. then across a big lawn to the giant Buddah.
There was a line around it and entering a doorway into the back.
After an hour or 2, we went in the door, and were able to climb a spiral stair to the inside of the head.
We could look out through the eye's and could see the crowds of people outside. Pretty cool.
When we said something in there, the sound was amplified , and boomed it out of the open mouth at the crowd below.
Pretty amazing experience.
Apparently the statue was over 700 years old, and had survived several earthquakes and a tsunami, that had knocked the original temple down on it.
The train ride back was much the same as before.
Very trippy day, that will always stick with me.

By the way, the shark fin soup at the little street stands was excellent too.
