Default Bass are invasive species?

** You may not live or fish in California, but this issue needs your support. **

There is currently a proposal in front of the California Fish and Game Commission to eradicate largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass.

On paper, the proposal is supposed to save salmon in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and its tributaries. By reducing size restrictions and increasing bag limits on bass, they are tempting anglers to fish them out.

In the proposal, the size limit on largemouth and smallmouth bass would be reduced from 12 to eight inches and the bag limit would be increased from five to 10 fish per day. For stripers, the bag limit would be increased from two to six fish and the size limit would be decreased from 18 to 12 inches. By making bass the villain and putting them in the category of "invasive species," they are trying to distract the Commission from the real problem.

This is a water issue -- not a fish issue.

Four years of drought have caused serious problems for CA salmon and called attention to the state's water issues. Since all fish need water, wiping out bass because salmon are struggling is a proposal that just doesn't make sense.

That's why we need sportsmen and women to sign a petition opposing this scheme. Tell the Commission you want them to focus on the real problem -- water.

Here are some important points to consider:

- Striped, largemouth, and smallmouth bass have coexisted with salmon in CA for over a hundred years. Smallmouth were introduced in 1874, stripers in 1879, and largemouth in 1891.

- In 2012, the Commission rejected a similar proposal to increase the bag limit on striped bass.

- Science supports that fish are scapegoats for water interests. Peter Moyle, a veteran delta fish biologist at the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences said reducing the striper population, "will make no difference at all. You've got all those other predators out there."

Don't let big water interests kill off CA sportfish. Sign the petition and keep the Commission focused on the real issues.
