If you ever want to read a great fishing book go find Monte Burke's 'Sowbelly' the hunt for the world record largemouth. In the book Burke travels around to find those trying to grow or catch that next world record. He travels throughout the south, southern California and Cuba looking for the lake and angler who is likely to catch the next big fish. Part of the story is those who try to grow or genetically engineer the next big bass.

But one of the cool parts of the story is Mickey Ellis who fought back from being a drug addicted ex-con to found the 3:16 Lure company. When his life really hit bottom Mickey went fishing and found what he wanted to do for a living. In Sowbelly the day the author visited his shop was the first day a 3:16 Swimbait was put on sale at eBay.

A good read.

A lot of guys throw big slimebaits on curados and they do fine... you should put more thought into the rod. You shouldn't have to worry about buying a bigger reel for bigger baits, as long as it's a decent reel and you take care of it it should work. Just play with those pin brakes inside till you find a good setting for it.

One thing I didn't understand is your choice of colors for the baits? The baby bass might do OK but I don't know of many places over here that have threadfin shad? 3:16 makes a bunch of real good trout colors and I don't think there's a body of water on the west coast where they don't plant those nice little feeder trout for the bass to gorge on... hehehe I'll prolly catch some flak from the slimers for that comment.

I was thinking the same thing about the shad color but 3:16 is only making those 2 patterns in the baby wake size. If you step up to the wake jr. or the Wake you can have a much larger selection. I would have chosen the bass and trout patterns.

That pattern will work. Shad patterns are just a great "generic" baitfish profile/color that works anywhere IMO. No "shad" in many lakes I fish but shad colored worms, jerkbaits, and swimbaits all get bit for me.

Finally got my rod today!!! Can't wait to get some time on the water!

Gonna have to feed the monkey some new swim baits soon too! Maybe the triple trout.

How much line does this reel hold? Does the line guide disengage when casting or does it go back and forth as the line comes off? I have been thinking about getting a Curado.

Bass pro shop has the Johnny Morrison reels for less and just as good if not better than the Curado i sold mine and went the JM , I do like the Curado dont get me wrong there great i just found something a lil less expensive , like under $140

If you like you can try one side beside i have both in the rod locker

I don't know about the new Johnny Morrisons, but I got a couple a few years ago, and they both broke down within a year. From what I've seen the Curado's are much more durable. The JMs were definitely nice for ahwile but they just didn't seem to have the same quality. But that's just my opinion, and I'm pretty hard on reels.

Pardon my ignorance, but those look a lot like a buch of baits I saw in my Dad's garage last time I saw in in NC. I think he ordered them from some ''special majic lure company'' from a magazine. He had a whole box of them-- maybe 20 or more. They are hard baits, jointed in the middle and look a lot like those in your pic. He offered them to me, and I declined. I have been under the impression that SB's were soft plastics? Maybe I should take him up on it. Not sure the quality compares, given the cost, but if they work.... Maybe I can get him to mail me a pic, w/ name, and you guys tell me if they are worth a shot. They don't look at all like the stuff I saw on the Tour they were using on clear lake video that was on ESPN earlier this spring. These look more like a jointed shad rap?Arethes soft or hard plastic?Well, boat is still in the shop, and if I am luky, I'll get it back in time for one more smallie forray on the ''C'' this fall. Coooling off , and time to re' do the whaler for dduck season soon. Life is food in the NW!

Baby wakes are 6", over 2oz each. 20 x ~$50 = $1000 dollars of bait you didn't take. They are hard plastic.

I doubt they were the same.

SBs is sort of a general generic and sometimes strangely used and loosely-defined term.

Thanks. I will ask my Dd to bring one along when we meet for duck hunting in a couple of weeks. the soft plastics look more appealing to me, but I am not a fish.

If you saw one of these hard baits in action you'll see how much it emulates a real fish. Most of the swimbaits I see are mostly hard plastics with soft tails. I know of only a few all plastic swim baits such as the castaic, hudds and the mattlures.
