I stack the hair, hold in my right hand and dip what will be the wing (stacked ends) in a lid full of warm water. Trade hands and begin adding the wing
I don't let go till I've had at least 5 or 6 good turns on 1st Then put a 3 turn whip finish on and not cut the thread yet. It helps to use the big size whip finisher and it takes a bit of practice to do a whip finish with you pinching a wing with one hand and have a bobbin hanging. Then cut the head then take thumb nail and hold the head up while wiggling the thread through the hair to the eye of the hook. Wrap a nice head, whip finish there and cement head.

I feel like I'm right on the edge of snapping the thread when I tighten down as hard as I 'want' to (I have snapped it a few times).
Is my thread too thin (Uni thread 6wt) or is this just a nuance thing that I need to keep practicing?
Thanks for any advice.

Plugs is skilled beyond most of our comprehension. I’m not sure I could pull off the one-hand-whip finish and I’ve been tying for a lot of years.
My best advise is to make a tight thread base under the wing. Hit that with cement, then add the wing. Knowing how tight you can pull without breaking the thread requires repeatedly breaking the thread. No sweat, just wrap over it and keep going.

Today we have a emergency opener that allows us to fish for sturgeon on the Columbia River and I'm sick as a dog.
So I guess 'llI stay home and tie flies all day.

After tying the little stimulator before I went to bed and seeing a hook and hackle catalog yesterday for some reason it reminded me of the old days waiting each month for the Kaufmann's Streamborn Catalog to show in the mail. I'm pretty sure the Stimulator had to be Randall Kaufmanns most favorite fly. I think I'll spend the rest of the day tying flies contributed to the man Randall Kaufmann the founder of the once most influential shop in the Pacific Northwest. Kaufmann's Streamborn.

Years ago (close to 25), when my now wife and I were still dating, I bought her a Sage 4wt from Kaufmann's for our first Valentines together. It will always remain, in my mind, as what a proper fly fishing store should be like. It was my favorite shop for years. The other day I noticed a few fly boxes that still have Kaufmann's price tags on them. My wife still has that Sage 4wt and uses it regularly.

Because I stopped tying for many years I still have a lot of materials I purchased from back in the late 80"s

That's really cool. I always smile when I see one of their tags on something.

Great looking flies. It's interesting to compare older steelhead flies to many of the modern flies. Some of the modern materials lists look like short novels. I enjoy tying some of them because they are like art, but I'm not sure they are more or less effective than some of the old standbys. Some days it's hard to go wrong tossing some variant of a woolly bugger. While I appreciate the creativity and talent it takes to design some of the very intricate, multi-part flies, a simple design that has worked for years has it's own sort of beauty.

Couldn't agree more. Love the old classics and hope to keep them alive by tying and sharing the patterns on multiple groups and boards.
