Default Official Coho Carnage Thread 2020/21

OK,

Never started one of these before but thought I'd toss this out and have some fun with the season I most look forward to. It's still early for my little rivers but these pics are from a December trip last year. ( if you recognize the rocks under a fish or the rock Dutch is sitting on, keep it to yourself. I'd have to beat my own ass if I gave up these spots. )

On this late December trip I hooked in excess of 40 fish and easily beached and released 30 + fish. All were on the same spinner.
I am a big fan of twitching but at certain times METAL RULES.............

THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE DAYS...................

Show me your coho. I don't care what river you caught them on.

The weapon of choice this day.

.

.

Dutch tested, Dutch approved

.

.

.

.

.

Can't tell you how frustrating it was to have to release chrome hatchery hens.

.

.

.

Always good to have a faithful fishing partner. She doesn't show up hung over ( too often ) and she doesn't complain if I out fish her.

.

Dutch climbs trees to keep an eye on me while wading.

Nice fish, particularly for December.

That spinner looks like a Pen-Tac body, and perhaps the blade too. Very nice!

Those are some beautiful Coho !!! I love my silver body Pen Tac spinner but haven’t tried it with a skirt attached. Guess I’ll have to experiment a little.

Here is a last year fish caught on a twitching jig I tied myself.

All these colors worked great.

Alright Ray, stop highjacking my thread...

But seriously, GREAT looking jigs. A word of advise.....K.I.S.S.

Those jigs are waaaay to pretty. I spend a total of 2 minutes per jig. That way i can throw them ANYWHERE and not worry about losing them. Like we were talking about the other day, coho love wood. They spent a year in fresh water before heading to sea. They hide in really small areas and favor wood. Wood and hooks don't go well together.

When I started Coho Carnage threads years ago, I was floating a secret crik that was LOADED with fish. They were all over/under the wood. The nastier the wood, the more loaded it was. The early 2000s were great for coho runs. My fishing partner and I were finding fish in every run, nook and cranny. If there was a stump in the river, it was crowded with fish. There was one spot that had several downed trees laying on the bottom. Luckily the fish were so aggressive that we didn't need to let the jigs sink. If they did, they would have been taken by the wood.

We had a hard time making it to the ramp by dark. Actually the last mile was run in the dark. Too many fish, too little time.

I hope the rumors of great ocean fishing translates to more fish in the criks.

Keep tying those great looking jigs Ray. I want to see pics soon.

My PT is going well. I may be fishing out of the sled in a couple weeks. I HOPE to be able to walk my criks by November.

Back to the pics.........

This pic is from "the hole where Dutch runs free"

This one is for Doc.......
He loved it back then.........

.

Here is a jig caught tank. 15 pounds plus. A couple threads of color on a hook is all it takes.

Pitching plugs in the estuary fish, can be included too.
I kind of miss that boat. Caught a LOT of fish out of that boat.

4/0 inhaler jigs... They don't bend out, and I can yard a 15lb fish over a log with em 🙂

I took the real quick approach to jig making and went with silicone skirts like the bass fisherman, seems to be pretty effective.

Before all us guys started twitching, the guides in Forks were throwing full sized hootchies/squids in a variety of colors. Think mid 90s. That probably got expensive with all the ways a client can find to lose a lead based lure. Tie on a strand of rabbit fur in pink or a glob of marabou and instant jig for pennies.

The rest is history........... DO YOU HEAR THAT RAY??

One of his legs will be substantially longer due to me pulling on it.

3/3 early afternoon at a spot I’d never hooked a fish before. I’d tell you all where but I had a shad fisherman in my back pocket before I Could even land the first one so it will be parked up with Tacoma’s already.

Pretty tough for me to just have ok looking jigs, to much pride getting in the way I guess but I will try and keep it simple.

Another one from last year the greenish blue colors are beautiful. tough to get good pictures when you are standing on a steep bank.

Decent one I got on the Kenai a few weeks ago. I like to fish kwikfish from the bank. Runs slowed way down since ☹️

I've got Oct 5-9 booked for Coho/Kings on the old stomping ground. Would prefer the next week but have some work stuff to do. Last year was pretty good to us. This was a good day, nearly a full limit for 3 people out of the cataraft.

The recent rain should help moving them in. I'm one of those "guys" that loves the B run coho bite.

B runs are good for the soul. They'll bite almost anything and are bigger. A runs could drive a man to drink and not give a crap either.

You tie the best looking jigs, both salmon and steelhead.

If you have relatively clean water, you might be able to keep them too. If you followed me around, You would come home with a MUCH lighter pack. I was mildly disappointed last year when my favorite spot had most of it's wood washed out. There were two different trees that harbored the fish. One ran down the middle of the hole. I would cast a spinner or jig at the tree then run down it's length. The fish would swim out from underneath and grab in plain sight. The other tree was a leaner. It fell down the bank and broke into the river. You fished ABOVE it and pulled the fish out the front side. Here's to hoping for more tree fall.

I agree the "A" runs will drive ya crazy but the B runs are worse than steelhead for aerobics I think. They are very irritable and will dance like crazy. SURELY the "A" runs are fun too catch and they're a great precursor to the bad to the bone "B" 'ho's and just as tasty! (Besides, it's about them eggs ya know...)

Beef,

I like the barely barbless hook. The spinner in my post had 40+ to its credit in one day. Not retiring it. I'm sure it will put many more on the bank.

UNTIL I LOSE IT..........

God I need to get out. 3 weeks post hip replacement right now. CAN'T hike the banks nor stand all day in the sled. 2 more weeks until I feel like I can get fresh pics to this thread.

Very Nice compliment, Thank You!

losing them is all part of the fun I'm glad they don't cost, much tying them is fun to do in the evenings.

Isn't that a steelie? I bought some of those years ago... green and blue hammered blade with silver backs as I recall. That old gear is buried somewhere and every now and again I hear about someone wanting them/using them...

Beefcakes' pic is definitely a little cleo. I have lots of them. I tend to fish water that a thinner profile works better in. I have had good success on Alaskan kings with them.

I hope this weeks' rain brings in some fish so we can get some fresh pics going here.

Bamp! Thanks for playing. Want to try Double Jeopardy, where the scores can really change?

It’s Luhr Jensen’s copy of a Lil Cleo, called a “Krocodile Stubby.” I don’t know if they even still make them. I bought a bunch for a trip to Alaska in August of ‘05; I think I have 3-4 left. I built so much confidence in them on that trip, I often just carry two of them (one orange and one yellow) and a couple BW29’s (a trick I learned here about that same time.

I think I posted a pic last year..krocodiles are super effective and so are lil cleo. Add a 2.5 inch pink hoochie or purple tail to it and hop and skip...you'll catch before anybody....especially super early hours as in first light.

Fished the Sandy last night at the RR bridge. No rollers, no biters, just enough rain to get all my gear wet in an hour and a half.

Well, no Coho, but definitely some carnage. Twitching the Sandy on Sat. afternoon, I lifted my rod, and it felt like I snagged a log, then head shake, head shake, game on. At first I thought I had a nice Chinook, but after a few very strong 50-60yd runs, I knew it was a Sturgeon. I should have just cut my line then and there, but I was making progress... I actually got it to the bank. While holding it there with my rod and reaching to get my jig out, it bolted. My rod exploded into 5 pieces in an instant and shredded my 20lb leader. I have to say the 35# mainline and 20# Seaguar held up well. Even my Crazy Alberto knot held up...

They were still talking about this on the bank on Monday! When I have other issues with fish I often look at my join knot still intact and take splice. Nice work

I think your son may have caught that fish in "Fly fishing only" water, if I recognize the background correctly.

The background is quite familiar, but it's not the Fly's Only waters. That starts at the natural gas pipeline and goes upstream to the intake to the lower hatchery. This pic was taken at the boat launch, just a few steps upstream of the bridge. So if this fish was caught where the pic was taken, he's good to go.

I know the guardrail looks like Tackle Grabber but not many cars on the opposite shore. Note above his left shoulder?

Morrow bridge takeout is the location.

I think I missed the car, because I have a macular hole in my right eye and have to get it surgically repaired on Wednesday. At least that's the excuse I'm going to use for now. LOL Amazing, how that utility pole and tree look like the middle of Beginners Hole though.

I don't have macular degeneration and at first glance, it looked like Beginners Hole to me, too.

Fished the NF Nehalem today. Fish are moving but not biting. I only got one and I also got rained on the whole time. I also broke my lamiglass xmg50 on a snagged fish. Tried plugs, spinners, eggs, and twitching jigs. Went to the jigs last and that's what got bit. Snagged and lost all of them I had after that.

Why is the hatchery closed?

Twitch jig is inherently the snaggiest method i've ever used. Touched one and broke off my jig on the clack the other day. Lost a few more after that.. wallet feels a bit lighter on the walk home.

Yeah, making them yourself will save you some money. buying and losing pre-tied at 4 bucks a pop can get pretty painful.

Don't forget ya'all........jig heads don't all need to be a half ounce and heavier. slower water can be fished with a 1/4 pounce head quite nicely.

NEVER

NEVER

NEVER.......cast upriver or more than directly across from you. They sink like a rock and snag easily. Find a source for jig heads and tie your own.

DO NOT BUY STORE BOUGHT JIGS. way too expensive for a technique that is inherently going to lose gear.
