Default Cedros Island fishing trip

Fellow Salty dogs:

I just came back from a 5 day trip to Cedros island. It was an incredible trip to say the least. I stayed at the Baja Magic Lodge that is run by Cedros Outdoor Adventures. This Island is quite remote and it is off limits to any large commercial boats including the San Diego long range boats, so the fishing is outrageous. We focused on inshore fishing so the species are very similar to inshore fishing on So. Cal (Yellowtail and Calico Bass with White Seabass, Huge Black Seabass, Grouper and Halibut as incidental catches. Later in the fall Yellowfin and Wahoo cruise the island.

The trip started out of Brown field in San Diego were we took a private twin engine plane to the Island. We landed at Cedros at 10:40am. We then loaded our gear on a truck and took a 15 min ride to the lodge. We grabbed a quick lunch at the lodge, got our rods and tackle set up and hopped on a Panga for an afternoon of fishing.
The full days of fishing started out with breakfast at 5:30 am, on the pangas by 6:15am, Make some bait (Small Mackerel are key baits to have), and then head to the fishing spots, Box lunches are provided on the Panga and you can return from fishing as late as 6PM. The gear that yu need has to be heavy duty for the Yellowtail, I used an Avet JX Raptor with 50 lb topshot and I still lost a few fish in the rocks. The Calico bass gear is a bit more tame using 25-30 lb topshot with a Lexa 400 HD reel.

Below is a summary of how each fishing day played out.

Overall fish count for the three guys on the Panga:

Monday afternoon (south part of the Island):
15 yellowtail 20 lb max size
Numerous large Bonito (we did not keep count)
We caught these fish on Live mackerel Yoyo Iron and surface iron
Tuesday all day (south part of the island, slowest fishing day of the trip)
6 large yellowtail all of them in the 25lb to 30 lb class (slow troll live mackerel, morning bite)
Lots of small yellowtail 8lb-12lb all released surface iron and Savage Mack- sticks stickbaits
Numerous large Bonito (we did not keep count)
18 calico bass largest was 6lb on Surface Iron and swim baits (orange colors and green colors) Reebs Kelpsassins worked really well also
Wednesday all day(went around Punta Norte and fished the weather side of the island, we targeted Calico bass)
2 large yellowtail (lost due to lighter bass gear)
86 calico bass average weight was 3 lbs with the big one at 6 lbs all fish were caught on Swim baits and Reebs Kelpsassins
Thursday all day(went around Punta Norte and fished the weather side of the island, we targeted Calico bass)
100+ Calico bass average weight 3lbs with the big fish in the 6 lb range. Reebs Kelpsassins .

Friday 3 hour morning run before catching the plane ☹ (fished South part of the island high spots)
8 large Yellowtail in the 25lb to 30 lb class all caught on slow trolled live Mackerel. (epic bite)
2 large Sheepshead caught on live mackerel while fishing for Yellows

Here are a few pictures from the trip.

WOW Tady.
Great report. I'm jealous and you're spolt.
Just kidding. But it sounds like a hoot.
Used to day trip out of San Diego and loved it. But that sounds like heaven.
Thanks again.
