Limited Friday and Saturday out of Newport. 6 fish both days. South of Light house. Done by 8 am on Saturday.
Spinning hooshie/anchovie combo and silver Brads. So wonderful to have good salmon fishing again.

Fished Friday and sat; I rarely fish Newport but got a call to join in. I am not an early riser when camp fishing so the day usually starts around 9 for us; anyways both days we got a fish early then the bite died around 11 and picked up at 2; Between 2 and 4 both days we hit fish S of the light house; between 21-40’ 12 oz 140-160’

Slow for us today. No one hot rod or lure, but best was in the propwash. A little after 2 when we finished our limit of coho. Take out line seemed to move really slow.ron m

7/14 6 coho 3 POB
Whoever called out the bite on Beverly Beach - Thanks.
Got 5 of our 6 fish there with only 1 high finner released. Fish were up high 14-20 pulls and the prop wash pole was the hot rod.

I set the hook on potential fish #6 only to have the ring break off the pink lady. Fish was last seen jumping behind the boat with said flasher.
The mighty coho won that battle. That reference is for apparentgenius and his avet

Yep, whomever called out the bite both days thanks a bunch , chasing radio fish really made a difference for us our last 3 trips.

Good chance that was me, there was just us and the one charter showed up, then two more, and then a few sports.
We did a lot of sorting, but had the nicest fish so far this season.

We had been from 125 ft south of the light, to 240, and back in north of the lighthouse, just kept moving and looking, and then we ,couldn’t keep all the lines in, it was nice to see that action again.

Then it was off to halibut fish, arg.....where the hell did they go.?

Last week there were hake .... everywhere, well they are gone and now the 3 to 4 pound black cod took their place. We kept 10 to do something with. Caught 4 petrale, nice big ones.

Threw back 20 more black cod and called it a day.

Got 18 pints of salmon in the canned and a smoke house full , in the brine.

Side note......a few boats went to the pile, and didn’t have much to say about it, but I went by the cleaning station later in the day and a guy had 3 that were 18 to 20 pounds if I was to guess.

Sounds like everyone did well....

7/15. Limits before 8:30 of smallish coho and one nice chinook. Hootchies or Brads though we didn’t use anything else. From the ptopwash to as deep as 80 on the DR (one fish that deep, the rest 35 ft on DR or on divers).

That's so funny. Saturday I ran in from the N end of the pile to that area. Okay bite in that area but I could not catch a hatchery fish to save my life.

Crazy good fishing today. Little rainy but almost no waves. Limits by 10:00 with around 7 or 8 released. Fish bit everything we put out. Never red hot but just super steady. Never more than about 10 minutes per bite. Little S of lighthouse in 140 fow was the ticket today. Found some biters early on and just kept making figure 8s the whole time.

Making me reconsider my Canada trip with fishing so good close to home.

We hit it 7/14 after about 2 hours of sleep after my best friends wedding. A lot of fun, about 25 hookups, lots of natives and two hatchery fish. Felt like we had too many fish come unbuttoned at the boat, started to get more aggressive with netting them quickly and that helped. I was using a metal bar between my diver and flasher and was wondering if that was costing me shock absorption? Anyone use snubbers? Do y’all use the 360 breakaways ? Or is this kinda just part of the whole coho rodeo? I am pretty new with this fishery but it is a lot of fun

we don't use a snubber. light drag just tight enough to hold the line in while trolling. don't set the hook. don't pump the rod. keep a good bend in the pole. coho are acrobats and once they start spinning it all depends on how well they are hooked to get them in.

Yesterday afternoon the wind waves and some consolidated wind waves were up a bit so the trolling was bumpy but doable. A bit of a rodeo feel. Hooked maybe 8-10, brought 6 or so to the boat, 1 hatchery keeper. A lot of natives. 150' depth straight out from the Yaquina bar. A lot of fun. Not many people out.

I watched your video. Is that about as far out as you'll take your boat? That's exactly where we pulled 6 fish from a week ago. Congrats.

Two of us off the lighthouse. 3 coho and 1 nice chinook in the box by 8:15 so we ran to the reef for bottomfish and the wind came up and we called it after 1 nice ling. Been a fun salmon season so far with more nooks than usual.

Stated at 8 , done by noon. Fished 20oz at 60-70 ft on line. Punter hoping for a nook . Hook three ho’s deep, all on brads cph with garlic tuna.
One ho on pink hoot hue,
I put on a red Simon 3.5 clone and hooked probably 10 before we got our last fish.

It’s a good day when this crew can get limits.

Thanks for all the posts.

SeaJay... Thanks for the tip on Beverly Beach. We arrived there, and limited relatively quickly! 2 POB with 4 Coho and a couple of keeper dinks released. Only 5 crab for 4 pots, however. Nice to talk to Wak as well!

It was good to hear you back out on the salt and glad you got your fish after the long leader shutout.
And I was was just paying it forward - apparently WAK was the one to call out the original tip.

7/16 --3 POB, limits for all; lots of natives. Most fish came early. The hatchery bite slowed after 9:00 and we had to move around to find our last fin-clipped. Most caught in 120-140 fow from green buoy to about 1/3 of the way to the light house. We had a couple of big hits. 2 broken leaders; one of those broke my new 10.5 Okuma. 2 popped off with bent hooks. (I'd been trying to solve my problem of fish coming unbuttoned at the net. I was shown how to use a #4 tuna/frog hook threaded thru a swivel as the "hot set-up" for coho; "just crimp the barbs, thread it onto a swivel to keep it from being pulled loose when the fish rolls"... "the 2 hooks give you a better set.") ...they ultimately just bent!

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to step my game up a notch if I'm going to get into chinook!

Having fun. "Now we're fishing"... Going to need a new tag soon! Craig

"the 2 hooks give you a better set.") ...they ultimately just bent!

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to step my game up a notch if I'm going to get into chinook!

Having fun. "Now we're fishing"... Going to need a new tag soon! Craig

sounds like your drag is set too tight. we run just tight enough to hold line in while trolling. we also don't care about getting them in fast. we like the fight of a fish. let them run and don't set the hook.

You know, that might have been the case. We started out having the drag set just so it didn't creep out at a fast troll; but I found that thru the day I was tightening it when bringing in the fish... and more than once I would forget to loosen back up afterward. Thx for pointing that out!

It was great hearing from you again, it took me a minute to realize I wasn’t dreaming.
I hope to meet up with you and see you out there more often.

I wasn’t so excited to throw pots, but my wife wanted too. We only took 2 and were surprised to get 23, even more of a shock was they were filled out more than expected.

Company and a family reunion “ arg!” ....will have me landlocked for week, but something’s can’t be avoided, ( and God knows I tried)

I hope some folks got out today for salmon. We've had a stretch of more than 2 weeks of really nice ocean conditions for boating and fishing, but looks like that stretch is over. Might still be fishable for some, but certainly not as nice as we've had. Lots of smaller boats have been going out and doing well. But some north wind will bring more up welling and that will be good for the salmon (and probably for tuna too!) The coho fishing has been quite good and here's hoping it stays good.

23,675 coho retained out of a quota of 90,000 in 23 days of fishing, 39 days of fishing/catch left in the season for reports, so looks like the quota will easily last through the Aug 22 closure date. Hopefully a good percentage will be rolled over to the non-selective season when the rollover occurs on "an impact neutral basis".

Quite a few chinook have been brought in too. My boat has averaged 1 chinook per trip but that's largely due to one trip when we got lucky and had 5 chinook and 3 coho though some of those chinook were just over the 24 inch requirement.

Fished Tuesday with 3 POB, got our 6 keepers but it took 7 hours. Released somewhere between 15-20 Natives and lost another 10 plus fish. Lots of fun. Fished again today with just 2 pob, got our four and done by 0830, both days in 150-160 out front and and a little North, fish seemed to be everywhere. Got one Chinook today about 14 lbs.
