Willies REALLY wanted me to have my new drift boat painted, but I declined. If you are towing your bare aluminum boat around while there is de-icer on the road, take a few minutes to rinse the spray off of your bare aluminum boat. I am lazy, I wash my drift boat, maybe, once per year. Now I have to polish my boat. Hopefully this helps someone else.

How heartbreaking it would be to have an expensive paint job. I put a bra on my willie drifter when I tow it and the paint under the bra looks good but the paint after does not.

It would probably help but a lot of what I have on my boat I think is from road gravel that flies up and hits the boat. I zoomed in on the OPs boat and he has marks on the lettering where it looks chipped off by gravel.

I don't know how much shark hide would cost to put on the boat but polishing and shark hiding a drift boat is a cost I wouldn't want to pay for a boat that bangs on rocks and gets roped down rocky hillsides.

But I'm going to start rinsing my boat after winter trips now that I know they are using de-icer.

The new thing Portland decided to do is use good old rock salt in the mix of de-icing agents.

Other areas of Oregon have been using it and its a bad move for consumers.

I was really unhappy to see that on the news. You should share why it's bad for consumers, plants and fish.

Yup, same thing happened to my little Gregor. Worst is my seat boxes aren't fully watertight (which I hadn't discovered yet) ~ so where the spray managed to percolate inside, it doesn't even get the little bit of incidental rinsing from further rain spray, nor does it dry out on its own unless you open them up to ventilate, so they REALLY corroded from the inside where it's much harder to polish out (not that it needs to look nice in there, but I'm still worried it'll continue to eat through if left alone).

I've got it figured out now, but can't go back and undo the prior pitting and some of the more severely corroded patches.

I think it was pretty apparent in Portland last year that when the weather gets bad, there is no good substitute for salt. Vancouver used salt and the roads were infinitely better. Portland did not and the streets were a disaster for weeks. A lot of consumer wrecked their cars.

There is good reason for boat manufacturers insisting on painting boats. A lot of unhappy customers after getting bare aluminum, even if they think that's what they want.

FYI, those marks are not rock chips, they are chemical etchings from droplet of deicer (flung up off the road by my truck tires).

Paint would have prevented this... the deicer doesnt eat paint like it eats raw aluminum.

That stuff is terrible! We probably get about 20 to 30 jobs a year refinishing metal that has been damaged by Magnesium Chloride. Yes Sharkhide does help.

adhesive backed decal of some sort, not sure of the actual material. it is not paint.

I think shark 🦈 hide would help. I tow my bare Willie predator around in the winter ❄️ a lot and never had those spots but maybe there wasn’t any de icers down. For a drift boat you could apply your self or have someone spray it on like EZ way
