Default Big draggers off the Central Oregon coast - what are they fishing for?

Was just looking at AIS and there are a lot of draggers, including some factory ships, off the coast near Lincoln City - Newport. What are they fishing for? Whiting?

I was looking at that last night also. 6 or 7 big factory draggers really close together. I'm was also curious what they were targeting.

you aren't kidding there are more than I have seen since I started looking at AIS...two groups... E of the CR canyons and NW of Nelson Island. Is there some new hake quota or does this happen yearly? Always wanted to see one of those in operation...

They may target whiting but they sure screwed up the banana
When they showed up a few years ago the halibut split and sharks took over
They were dragging right over the banana until the sport fleet showed up then they moved a mile west
Depoe halibut has never been the same
I think they destroyed the habitat dragging the bottom

The boat is out of service until further notice and won't be seeing any saltwater. The only water is going to be from the garden hose and the sky

They are fishing hake. They don't fish bottom nets for hake. The big factory boats never have fished hake with bottom gear. All pelagic IE mid-water nets.

It always amazes me how many people spout off thinking they know something about mid water trawl when in fact they know nothing.
These guys are not bottom dragging, ake is a mid water fishery. And there are observers on every boat to make certain things are done right. Whether you realize it or not we all need the commercial industry to be vibrant. Take that away and your rights are next! Please get educated before you speak untruths that ultimately will hurt us all.
I am not so sure that everyone here is so innocent where by-catch is concerned, ie all the yellow eyes floating every all depth halibut day!
Come on guys wise up and realize we are all in the same boiling water and if we dont come together we all loose.
