State law not union contract kept him on the books.

More like an individual taking advantage of a law meant to protect those injured on duty and management who are unwilling to investigate and enforce regulations. In the long run it may have made fiscal sense just to pay him rather than pay the cost in court to fight his larceny.

I think he was getting about $113k per year. Got raises and benefits during all those years then retired on the state's dime. Some state back east, he was a city police detective that got a staph infection. He never fully recovered so was on sick leave.

An (educated) guess on my part; he got a MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection. Unless I'm much mistaken, once you test positive for it, you'll always test positive, similar to testing positive for TB even if you had it 50 or more years ago. It doesn't mean you're incapable of resuming "normal" life! I see patients on literally a daily basis with a "history of" MRSA. To say he was "injured", "disabled", or "incapacitated" from MRSA (again, this is speculation on my part) is plain and utter nonsense! In any busy grocery store, there will be at least a few and possibly several people with a "history of MRSA" going about their daily lives. This case sounds like abject abuse of "the system" to me.

At least he'll still receive his accumulated sick and vacation pay.
What a deal.

I don't know. I know many and have family that are police officers. With the exception of one, they are are all of a specific political bent.

Just like in my profession most (not all) are of a specific political bent.

Some job descriptions work well without specific beliefs, others tend to collect like-minded individuals.
