My take is that most of the fish that are willamette bound turn up the channel. The channel has current and stays cooler. Once they get out of the channel they get to a warm lake. They don't really know what to do for a while so they just kind of swim in circles and hang out longer.

What’s the temp of the Chanel? Before this hot weather it was coming down and was at like 59 which got me excited but I’m guessing it’s going to warm back up now

I tried to go shad fishing yesterday in OC and the water was really low and the flow was ripping past. Lots of rain coming into the river from upstream I'd imagine. I'm guessing that will keep the temps down but not for long?

Yeah I fished Sellwood yesterday finally some current there and water was cooler I’m heading out of town for two weeks hoping there’s still some fish when I get back

Still some fish around. Struck out on Wednesday. Fishing two rods we were 3 for 5 on Thursday and all were hatchery in the 14 to 16lb range. Friday we fished three rods and were 0 for 4. Most of those were on a Brad's cut plug with the single trailing treble hook. Personally I prefer two singles, one at the belly and the second trailing, but i don't tell people how to fish a second time.

Not done yet! Heard there was some kinda sturgeon fishing today...? Hundreds of folks drowning bait with some very long faces.

Kiddo and I got this one and it was a proud daddy moment: I handed her the rod but she did all the rest completely solo with no help. Took two shots with the net but then oh what a celebration. Even had to call mommy.

Checker at bayport had zero sturgeon and one chinook at 13:30 [whistle]

Got my grandsons into their first chinook ever earlier this week. Proud moment for sure. My oldest almost landed it solo, but had to hand it off toward the end. The teamwork made it even more memorable for the two of them.

So I did my 1st trip of the season, lots of other things going on. Trolled the Sellwood & spaghetti factory area. Saw one other boat. Parking lot had 3+ trailers. Felt like I might have been a day late and dollar short. Man it was good to get on the water.

I think you should have put in at Scappoose Bay, must have been 75 to 80 trailers in the lot yesterday.

I am sorry you've had a tough year.

I really, really appreciate this comment. I'm glad to hear that someone has lived somewhat vicariously through our season of covid. This fishing has been a much needed bright spot in a tough, tough spring.

I've enjoyed this thread more than any on ifish in a long time.

If it makes you feel any better, my grand total for last year was exactly ZERO spring chinook. It was a tough year for me and I didn't get out much and struggled when I did. this year we rallied!

It does make me feel (a little) better to hear that I'm not the only one who had such a crappy 2019. I had one takedown for quite a few trips. This year, I'm "one landed, one lost" for dozens of short trips. 100% improvement!

I started fishing in 2017, caught one in my first boat trip, and thought "heck, this is easy!!".

Bankhog, I have a 16 foot Dory, so I'm looking for places that I can fish without too much current. The pic looks just right. Should I be concentrating on tributaries instead of the main stem of the Columbia?

You don't have much of a choice right now since the Columbia is closed.

Three rods, spinners, pro trolls, from the falls down to Sellwood bridge this afternoon. Nice boat ride, no action, didn't see any either.

Went all the way up to the falls for the first time. Eight or ten boats up there fishing different fast water, eddies, crazy water, I got the hell out of there.

I wonder if those guys at the falls were fishing shad or salmon. It is spooky up there the first couple times. I get that for sure.

25,000 plus over Willamette Falls as of June 23 and probably another couple thousand since then.

Not late.

Like Rogue said, probably not late. In a good year, Willamette and channel fishing can be very good well into June. It's more like the front end of the run is missing.

I've only got a drift boat so I pick an area for trolling and am pretty much stuck there. No zipping up and down the river.

Is the head of channel area more productive? I was obviously betting on farther upriver.

Well said DZ. The question is what happened to those front end fish? What did the hatcheries change up to make such an obvious change in the returns? Where did those early fish go? I'm sure there are a few fish experts that can explain it on here in 200 words or less!

I’m no expert but I “heard” if they released smolts later they are larger and they get a better return, but also later. That was just part of a conversation and I could be totally wrong.

I heard that releasing large smolts increased the Jack run. My personal feeling is large smolts require more food and it may be more than what's available so they enter the salt in poorer condition than younger/smaller fish. The ODFW experts say the want them big so they race for the salt and clear the river quickly. The natural progression to salt is supposed to be somewhat leisurely, not a race so this simple change from nature could in the long run be what's ruining survival. Nothing good ever comes when trying to change nature.

26K adults over the falls.....700+ jacks.....2021 looks dire if the jack count stays in the 3% range.

My springer season has been great. This is fish number 18 hauled over the gunnel of my boat this season. There's also been some summer steelhead in the mix, as well.

Our early Spring was tough too, but how can you complain when you can easily fill a tag with Springers just fishing in June? Heck, you could probably do it now in July if you wanted to put in the time. There are tons of fish in the lower river. You just need to put in the time to see how 'your boat' best fishes them. Everyone is fishing the same things at the same depths. You just need to experiment with what tuna 'mix' works best in either BCP or BSB and the speed in YOUR BOAT that makes your rod pulse the best. It will be different, based on leader length and how you hold your mouth. With all the boats still fishing, it's definitely not a secret. The weather is nice. Take your wife, a child, or your dog, spend some time with 200 of your best friends, maybe make some new ones, and go catch the best fish we have available all year.

If it’s anything like Friday.......a zoo would be appropriate. Trailers parked along the railroad tracks, on the uphill on Baltimore and the side streets, crowded as I’ve ever seen in over 40 years of using that ramp.

5 for 7 for three days of fishing. To respond to the question on whether the Spring run is late. The answer is "No". Years ago the fishing was usually over by mid May. Since returning to Oregon in 2003 some of our best fishing has been in late June. I suspect this late run can be attributed to later smolt releases.

Hardly anyone up near the papermills in oregon city. Guess everyone's thinking they're blowing right through when that's not the case. 2 of the 5 nights this week was a bite that I've havent seen since late 90's. Even a couple guys on the catwalk got a few fish. Rollers galore.. Thankfully I'm 5min from sportcraft put in and can be fishing in a mere 15 minutes from when I leave my house. Saw a dude wednesday evening at last call bring 3 over the rail in 20 minutes on 3.5's. When your in em your in em. My 4 solo trips produced well this week. 4 fish in 4 trips, cannot complain..

Caught a nice 4th of July Springer today, fishing solo at the HOC. Fished from about 1pm-6:30pm on the barge side of the river, with nothing all day. Decided to cross the river for one last lap, and BAM! On my last pass landed this big-shouldered buck. My first ever (successful) solo net job, too!

Was pretty dead this morning at OC/ WL above 205. Lots of grass.

Been Kokanee fishing mixed with wife weekends. Was good to get back on the river. HOC. Saw 2 tiny jacks released 3? Unclipped released and about 4 kept. Lots of boats, over 50. Both sides of the river had boats and fish on so I’m sure
more were caught that we saw. I had a takedown on a tuna filled Brads, it
turned out to be a clipped steelhead.

Had our best day of the season last Thursday going 4 for 7 with 3 keepers fishing two rods. Fished the Columbia on Monday and saw one chinook for six rods in our line. Spent three days on the Willamette and had that one good day.

I assume about a dozen caught this morning. We got 2 near 18 lbs that were released and a drive bye and one came off. ProTroll/spinner. A great day for my boat. One by the barges, one by the red can.
Then we tried below the Sauvie Island bridge for walleye (rookie) w worm and bottom harness set ups and only got hand sized starry flounder, perch and small mouth bass.
An overcast, cool day on the river. Good times.
