Default Help on rigging a tube jig weedless

How do you rig tubes such as gitzits for weedless fishing. I know how to rig them grub style with a leadhead for river fishing etc. I want to learn how to rig them for fishing the heavy grass and weeds.

Thanks

Thanks,
You guys are awesome. You know, I have caught chinook down on the Tidewater of the trask on tube baits.

Tanner,

I fish tubes weedless all the time. They are a wonderful, versitile bait. There's a couple of ways to do it.

First way is easy, but requires special hooks and weights. They're an eagle claw hook, called a "shaw grigsby tube hook" I think. they have a wide gap and a locking wire in the front end (you can get these at fisherman's). You simply run the hook point through the front of the tube and out the side (Like you would a texas rig) and then use the locking wire to keep it from sliding down teh hook. They make special weights that fit inside of tubes and attach to the hook to keep them from moving around.

The second way is a little easier. I buy gamakatsu EWG (extra wide gap) offset worm hooks that are just a little shorter than the body of the tube. Just texas rig the hook and put a drop of superglue on the shank of the hook close to the eye. Instead of leaving the hook point inside of the tube, run it all the way through the tube and "skin hook" the point into the outside of the tube. This gives you better hook sets, because most tubes are made of tough plastic.

If you want to add weight to a texas rigged tube you can use bullet weights pegged in place with toothpicks or buy "gambler screw-lock" bullett weights. They have a corkscrew wire that will screw into the tube and not go anywhere. You can buy these at Classic tackle out on Burnside.

Tubes rigged weedless on med-heavy spin gear kick butt. You can skip them under docks and bushes and fish seem to eat em' up.

Good Luck

Aaron

No, really. Plunking for chinook down there, some of my buddies came up with a hoochie "plunking" rig. Instead of hoochies, I decided to try a gitzit. Hooked three chinook that day.
