Elliott State Forest Updates
In December 2014 after extensive analysis and public input, the State Land Board asked the Department of State Lands (DSL) to conduct further work on three possible future scenarios for the Elliott:
· Decouple timber harvest on the Elliott from school funding by soliciting proposals for a new owner(s) of the forest;
· Request proposals to minimize management costs of the forest if it continues to be owned by the Common School Fund;
· Continue discussions with NOAA Fisheries until the end of April 2015 to see if a viable path to a Habitat Conservation Plan can be achieved.
While this work is being done, DSL does not anticipate proceeding with the sale of the two remaining Elliott parcels which the State Land Board approved in December 2013. DSL expects to return to the State Land Board later this year to report on the status of the project and receive guidance on next steps. DSL’s intent is to complete full implementation by June 2017.
