Default Dakar Rally 2020

Anyone else watching the 2020 Dakar Rally from Saudi Arabia ?
I have always watched at a distance but this year committed to watching the stage recaps each night
Interesting race that’s about 4500 miles over 12 stages and 12 days. The rules look like they can change by stage.
The run motorcycles, quads, side by sides, off road rally vehicles and some type of large truck that looks like a motor home on steroids. Watched a bike rider tonight almost get taken out by a herd of camels.
It’s a really big test of endurance and mechanics.
Stage 2 recap tonight so I’ll get a better understanding as it progresses.

Love the cross country races, history was this was Paris to Dakar Egypt , something like 5000+ miles. However politics and religion have curtailed the format.

Not quite sure how it is called Dakar still- it isn’t the destination any longer. More branding I guess. The varied terrain in the Mediterranean was very cool, and saudi doesn’t have much variation / challenges like turkey and Egypt.

The Kamaz trucks have always been amazing to me- 8.5 tons and 16 gears. Crazy stuff.

Zacally what Gus say's.
No longer the REAL Dakar race.
But still fun to watch.
The Baja races can be just as good.
And there is also another such race in south America I thunk

Hard to believe that any Russian vehicle can hold together long enough to finish that race.

Kyle Busch will win it. Greatest driver ever.

Watched the stage 5 recap tonight. Not familiar with most of the drivers other than F1 driver and non Indy qualifier Fernando Alonso but these guys are balls out in the middle of nowhere. All so no sign of Kyle Busch in the top 50.
Watching this race on a big screen in hi def really extrapolates the scenery and terrain. It’s pretty cool.

Hoping to get a bit more educated on what makes this deal tick.

NBCSN is providing the 30 minute recaps each day.

Mind says I can compete in this series but body say one fall and your a dead man.

That's all I've been seeing, the 30 minute thing. Yes, some of the scenery is breathtaking.

It looks like there is no designated race course. Shortest distance between two points seems to be the rule. What's this about getting a speeding ticket? This is racing... One of the racers was penalized 5 minutes for speeding.

After he's won a few more NASCAR championships, the real Indy 500, the F1 championship including Monaco and Spa, the 24 hours of Daytona AND LeMans, maybe he'd be in the top few. Until then he's a one trick pony, a good one, but so far just a really good NASCAR racer.
Even in NASCAR he's about 10th in overall wins, not even close to Petty, Pearson, Gordon, Yarborough, Johnson ... oh and one other guy, Dale Earnhart.
Good driver, maybe great one day but not there yet. Mario Andretti is the GOAT in my book, see above.

A couple of years ago Alonso was leading the Indy 500 late in the race when his engine let go, he can drive there just fine. Not surprised about Busch. He could compete, he's just never ventured outside of NASCAR.

I see one of the motorcycle riders got killed in a crash yesterday. Seems like at least one rider each year gets killed. Toughest race on earth!!!
