Default Where to find surf perch?

My 10 year old son and I tried surf fishing for the first time yesterday. We went to Rockaway beach and got skunked. Any recommended hot spots? I’m coming out of north plains.

Thanks.
Tony

the way I do it is start at any point on a beach and after a few casts with no bites move down the beach a hundred feet or so and start casting if nothing then move a little again till you start getting bit then hang in there. just remember the fish are in the white water so don't cast out super far you will be past them. good luck !

Thanks! I was using a pyramid weight (3oz) and it was rolling from north to south. It eventually ended up in the white zone. Is it typical that the weight roll? On my second pole, I used a 4oz pyramid weight and it didn’t roll so much.

The Pink Fin’s are in the estuaries giving birth right now, not in the ocean. Give ‘em three or four weeks and they’ll be back.

By the amount of lead you indicated you were using, you may have been casting too far. They can be right in front of you in a foot or two of water.

Cover water, cast, move, cast, move till you find them. If they’re there and feeding, they’ll let you know immediately. If you wait for them to come to you, you’re wasting time.

I normally use the flat weights, they roll around much less.

They move in schools. If you cast five times and no bite, move 50-100 yards. Repeat until you find the school.

Rockaway is so famously good that they named a surf perch rod after it.

Rockaway; Walk the beach until you see mole crabs in the land wash, cast out about 50 feet or so.

Excellent info! I will try again. Even though we didn't catch anything, it was fun. My son just likes to cast anyway and he got lots of practice. My son and I took our RC cars out and had a blast during low tide.

Tony.
You, Sir, did NOT get skunked. Many attaboys for good times with your son and introducing him to fishing the right way.

Here's my son using my 10' Fenwick Eagle rod. He was probably casting right where he should have been. I was probably casting too far.

If you're on FB, become a member of the Oregon surf perch fishing page. A lot of good info and intel on there.

The perch like the sand crabs (mole, sanddab.etc), easy to catch, and the perch strike hard!

Cape Lookout State Park, from the parking lot at the day use area and south to the rocks.

Seems like there are always sand crabs and perch in front of that little rock bluff that sticks out of the bank and slopes to the sand, a bit south of the creek.
