Default Old boat question

so say you have an 12 year old 17 foot star craft with a busted motor. what would you do? the boat is paid off and you have no bills. you love bass fishing but also enjoy walleye and crappi and an occasional salmon.

1 Buy a new triton or Ranger and fish for salmon on a friends boat

2 . buy a cheap motor

3 buy a brand new larger motor for the old boat?

There is a certian cheapo ifisher that needs to see this. he's tighter than bark on a tree and squeeks when he walks.

IMHO ID BUY THIS> AND BE DONE WITH IT

Hmm... if he's that cheap - a new boat might be a no-go for dude. New used motor might be a good option.

Then again, if said person HAS the cash, and just needs convinced... new boats make everyone happy

You can find older motors around fairly cheap..... for instance the pre-Optimax Mercs are pretty bulletproof and shouldn't cost an arm or a leg.

May have to expand the search past Oregon however.

If you want to factor in shipping, you could look at the bass boat central forums.... tons of used motors on there.

Or just scrap that idea and buy a Ranger, however I am a little biased

Boats are a notorious money pit to begin with. 12 years old isn't that old. I'd go with a new motor for the boat. But I like your idea too. That boat there would do it all.

I'd think if your happy with this boat, repower it. There are a lot of motors out there that will keep ya fishin for a long time. Setting up a different boat can be spendy and may cut into your fishin time / money?

New boat, new motor, get something better than you deserve. I liked my old star craft, but the designs and comfort of new boats and cleaner burning engines is important to. You will not miss the smell of burning 2 stroke oil while out in nature.

I have a 4 stroke 15 hp mercury and its nothing but trouble. Those carbs on them suck.one drop of water mixing in the gas and your dead on the water. I hear the fuel injection isnt much better. Im selling it and using a 50s evinrude at least its somewhat reliable. I love the smell of two strokes in the morning. If its illegal in cali its has to be be better. I hope to replace with a late model 2 stroke.i hope to buy 20 hp merc in the future. Just do your math maybe higher hp 4 strokes are better.

I think Dan should fix it, sell it, and buy a BIGGER motor and get back on the water. Nothing wrong w/ his boat.
