I don't know if this has been posted yet But I caught two winter steelhead today going after fall chinook. My wife who has never been fishing with me, took the video and this all I could get for a picture. so your going to have to trust me. I would post the video but it gives away the spot Sorry.

Has anyone noticed that the whole first page if ifish threads are "about" fishing subjects but no actual reports. Must be The dead zone between fall chinook and early winter steelhead. I've made enough spinners and steelie jigs to get me well into January. Now, how about having some rivers pull into shape? I'll be ready and hope to report my first winter run for the season. Looking forward to your reports too. Tight lines everyone!

soon as the water drops a little it should be good, plus the season for most rivers open.

Tried getting out over the holiday weekend, but it was pretty futile with all the excess water everywhere. Only found a few spots even worth casting, mostly more driving/scouting just to get out of the house...

My first ever Thanksgiving Day Steelhead came off that river back in the early 1980's. Lived a couple mile away for a bit in the late '70's and back then they put in so much early return stock it was thick all thru December but they cut all that back years ago. It wasn't natural, the amount of fish returning to that little creek, and recycling them from the hatchery back to tide water, all of 2 miles, really piled them up on the North Fork come Jan to Feb, many fish being recycled over and over again. The South Fork was pretty cool if you could hike those canyons and watching Steelhead trying to jump the impassable falls was awesome. One day I'd really like to go back up and hike the south fork to the falls_

Today I fished Oregon's 2 northernmost coastal tribs. Very light fishing pressure at both. Heard of 3-4 bright winter steelies taken at the handicap fishing ramp but only 1 was hooked below there from what I saw. Didn't see any action at the other river. Bobbers and beads, jigs, yarnies and spinners of multiple colors to no avail. Water color was great at each river. Plenty of visibility but not too low or clear. Basically not many fish have arrived yet. I hope the winter steelhead are coming home for Christmas.

i spent a coffee break this morning on the clack, river was high but green and definitely on the drop. with 2 days of little rain and low temperatures it should shape up nicely for this weekend!!

This may be the latest I've ever picked up my first winter fish. Between work and persistent high water, I've had a hard time getting out over the last month.

Finally got rid of work for a few weeks and decided to brave the really cold weather today. I rolled out of the house about 1030............. weenie.......

I picked up my first winter about 30 minutes into the trip.

Small hatchery buck, about 5 or 6 pounds. But better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick..................

I just started fishing a little over a year ago and have had a fantastic year of firsts: sturgeon and trolling for kings from a kayak, plunking for summer steelhead, twitching for coho and now my first native winter steelhead on bobber and jig. I never experienced ice on rod tips and ferrules or first degree frost bite before so those are firsts, too!

I've learned so much on this site and have made many new friends via iFish who have been gracious and willing to teach an old man new tricks. Thanks for a memorable year!!

I love that spinner for winters and summers. Even in low clear August water that spinner in size 4 always produces for me. It's almost as good as a size 5 Bud's in silver...almost.

Seems like a slow start this year. Wanna see some more fish.

Hopefully things will improve in the next week or so!

No sticks in the eye? You aren't busting enough brush.

I almost had a pretty Coho buck yesterday. Only had tiny piece of beach to put it on and 3 times I had it there, but he kept rolling till the hook pulled out. I actually caught it sight fishing.

With the recent cold snap, fishing in the mornings has not been my friend.

Only a few hours in the afternoon to fish. Now the snowfall. At least it is melting quickly. My early rivers have not been very productive. Only 16 more days off.

Got new waders and boots and I'm itching to go...was going to go last week...heater in my truck quit working so I took it to the shop instead of fishing, water pump was out and leaking bad...didn't notice with the wet weather. Good thing I didn't go fishing, I'll just go tomorrow I thought...river blew out that night so I passed again...went to go today and didn't even make it out of town before deciding it just wasn't worth the risk. Roads are terrible. Ughhh...it's just a fish...it's just a fish...

What makes it worse is a little superstition thing I got going on, everytime I have something new, new rod, reel, waders, boots, I catch a fish. With new waders and boots I feel it's a guarantee. O-well...we went to the store and got stuff for a taco bar dinner...sit at home and drink caboritas all day and watch movies.

Fishing buddy and I ventured out yesterday (12/14) before the snowstorm started. This was my second trip out for winter steelhead. This time I got lucky, I guess. The fish was a really small buck: 19" and 2 1/2 lbs. Not a trophy, but I was glad to get on the board. 1000 casts with yarnies, jigs, eggs, beads. In the end, a 10 mm UV bead with anise scent did the trick. Hope his big brothers arrive soon.
Hit the snow on the way home. Just on the final leg on River Road to Sherwood I saw 9 cars in the ditch plus one upside down. Drive carefully!

I too feel your pain. My rivers have been either too high or too cold. ( is high and cold even a thing ? ) Tough time of year, to be sure. But I will make the best of it. Getting my christmas shopping done and lots of splatter backs tied.

Now for a quick trip to the hills to play in the snow before the Hawks game.........

Almost went today but decided against it again...figured by my next day off the weather will be better...and now the river is predicted to blow out again...can't catch a break...whatever...blown or not I'm going next chance I get.

Oh yeah, I figured there'd be lots of people. Was going to go anyways but the cold last night froze the roads again. I'm sure we would have made it fine but all the factors...frozen roads, freezing weather, Saturday so lots of people, made us choose to pass it up and wait til our next day off...now the river is predicted to blow out by our next day off...either they are wrong in the prediction because the weather doesn't look that bad or they are considering snow melt?...not sure how much snow is up there and how much of an effect that would have on the river. Anyways glad to hear you at least got a fish Ray. Looking forward to the pic. Pm me where you picked it up at.

I like guessing games, I'd say 25" 3 1/2-4lbr and a 30" 8lbr. Nice catch. I hope to add some to this thread very soon.

Haha! It's a small buck but also fat mint bright hen. The hen went 31in about 10lbs. The one laying in the snow the next day was about the same. The buck was about 4-5lbs.
