Default Shimano Symetre Help Needed

I've always fished the Symetre 2500's for salmon/steelhead they've never let me down. A few years ago some unscrupulous individual decided to relieve me of 6 of them along with their respective rods... so I was forced to replace my set of 2500 FJ with the new at the time FL series.

Shimano changed the the bail assembly from a single piece metal to multiple pieces including plastic.

The plastic has a tendency to catch the line before it lands in the line roller. I've scored the plastic on a few of the reels and now it's a major hazard to line wear and losing fish.

Any ideas on how to replace the whole bail with a metal one? fix the plastic? I'm short of $600 for a new set of reels so I'd prefer to repair versus replace.

Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like the plastic is just a rounded thru hole chunk. If so, get a piece of aluminum rod about the same size cut to length, drill a hole through and with a screw and nut holding it tight, chuck it up in a drill and use a file and sandpaper to form the piece. Replace in reel.

This is what happens when a reel manufacturer puts cheaper parts on an old model in lieu of putting those same, more reliable parts on more expensive, newer models. Sucks some maggot had to steal from you.

do they all have that slit in the plastic piece. as it looks like it was cut in from your line being there and not going all the way in?

shimano is usually good about fixing things give them a call.
or you could put some epoxy in the slit then sand it but who wants to do that with a higher end reel.

i have a 4 year old one that doesnt have that slit.

I would glue a piece of small gauge wire in the slot and leave it a little higher than the surrounding metal so the line won’t fall into a low spot.

Another approach might be to cut a slot at the end of the metal portion of the bail so the line slides over it and into the correct position.

Probably need some small files to work on the plastic.

Kid: I forgot to add, glue a piece of wire in the slot. Dunno how I left that out.

I fished 5 of these for about 150 days a year. They all did the same thing. You can order parts from Shimano for not much money. I changed brands and now have no problems. Pflueger President reels.
