Not really bourbon, but hey, maybe you don’t like real bourbon.

While we are on the ones to “find”. Try the Wyoming Whiskey Bourbon Small Batch. It’s also not Kentucky bourbon, but is pretty good. It’s only 87 proof so a little easier to drink than Wild Turkey Rare Breed and other similar stronger bourbon.

I'm no expert but I have a dozen or more different bourbons and the one that taste the best to me and my wife ( blind taste test) is old forrester 1920. I have some that are cheaper for sure that are good enough and have a few that are more expensive but the 1920 has the best flavor and is one I will always have on hand. If you've never had it your missing out.

My favorite bourbon is 1792 brand. Smooth and great for sipping on, or by mixing with ice water. Mmmmm.

You guys keep adding to my shopping list. The only thing I’ve tried the past couple of years that I didn’t find particularly good was Bullit Rye. Think I spelled that right? A little on the harsh side but I’m kinda wimpy when it comes Bourbon and Whiskey. I wanna try some Dewars blended scotch one of these days. Everything is worth a taste test.

Harvey, long, sad story why I am not a Scotch man -- especially single malt. My 23andMe DNA/location profile would be ashamed of me.

If scotch is on my drinking agenda, monkey shoulder is what I like. Look up the term monkey shoulder, and you'll see why that scotch is named as such.

Two recommendations- Buffalo Trace for bourbon. My son knows way more than me about liquor, but I agree with him that there isn't nearly as much difference between bourbons as between single malt Scotches. Either the Trace or Wild Turkey 101 is fine. Scotch is different. If you're in the mood to splurge, try some Lagavulin 16. None better, IMO.

Only bad thing about being a whiskey snob is your robbing yourself of some good whiskeys. I will admit alot of the whiskeys I like are speyside single malts but there are some great blends out there too. But like the whiskey vault guys say the best whiskey is the whiskey you like to drink how you you like to drink it. So to each their own.

Buffalo Trace is my most visited elixir. I will use Pendleton as a substitute if not available. Glenlivet 12 is another staple. I’m currently out of everything.... Shame on me.

You either have different taste buds or haven’t tried as many bourbons as I have. I agree Wild Turkey 101 is good. I find any Buffalo Trace quite a bit different and Wild Turkey 80 and Rare Breed are dramatically different even though they are from the same distillery.

On another note, I’ve been told do not under any circumstance buy any bourbon made in Oregon. My brother and I have completely different tastes in Scotch but not Bourbon. I’ll trust him if he says I’ll hate all Oregon bourbon.

Still, just find something you like and stick with it.

You have some time on your hands, you could start a whiskey blog! There are small whiskey producers popping up like hemp fields over here, all need reviews.

I don't drink enough of it to have tried a lot but Glenlivet and Glenfittich are good enough when I do!

LG: I’m a poor candidate for doing a huge taste test as my hard liquor consumption is very limited. I got into it on a small scale based on Ifish discussions. I’m the curious type so it’s easy to play along but it’s never going anywhere.

I wonder what everyone started with before they became picky. I liked Canadian Club and Crown Royal once I began to develop a taste.

There was a time in my life I though I think it was called, Royal Salute, was as good as whisskey could get. Then I tried a single malt, Glenlevte wow. All the difference in the world between single malt and blended scotch, blended is junk! Not to big on blended Burbon either, the Canadian stuff. Like Geo. Dickle best but developed a taste for Bird Dog Peach! Dickel and Bird Dog a bit pricey for me so normally end up with Ezra Brooks. Don't drink very much, two or three really small glass's w week and the stuff poured over ice.

Sure am glad none of you have mentioned my new favorite. I won't either! The stuff is hard to find in Oregon. I guess it's what you'd call zipper-lip bourbon. It runs $50 and is a Kentucky product.

As far as a nice $25 bottle goes, I have been enjoying Four Roses. Nice flavor.

Someone posted to avoid Oregon Whiskeys. I don't know if it counts as an Oregon product, but Eastside Distilling's Burnside Bourbon is pretty good. The booze is sourced outside the state, but aged in Oregon Oak barrels. Pretty good for a $30 bottle.

A lot of NW whiskey is really Canadian Blends, so why is it so many of these whiskies use Canadian Blends? Does Canada have better tax breaks, better water, better stills, or is it just something left over from the prohibition era.

Blanton's is $60, so you must be talking about Weller Antique 107? 😉

Dude. Really? I mean, you could have at least spelled it backwards!

Yeah. Pretty good stuff if you can find it. It is a wheated bourbon. The Special Reserve is pretty good too at $26. So many of the liquor stores in the Portland area are holding it for bar and "waiting list" customers. I can't tell you how many waiting lists I'm supposedly on ... still no phone call. Despite using OLCC'S locator feature on their website, it is hit or miss to find this wonderful brand.

Just poured me a bit of devils share bourbon. I told my wife I wanted a bottle of devil's share to try for my birthday earlier this year. We were on a whiskey kick still at the time and I thought shed get me the whiskey. That's what I wanted and was talking about but she grabbed me the bourbon instead. Cant be mad about it. It's pretty good. Little pricey though.

I think the Scots, thrifty as they are, didn't want anyone drinking all their whisky. I don't know why anyone would. I do like scotch whisky, no ice, no soda, but there are some I've had where the taste of burnt log is just too much for more than one.

For my palate, darn near anything from Buffalo Trace distillery works just fine.

Standard Buffalo Trace for $25 bucks is the go to for any non special occasion.

Eagle Rare is the same juice, just aged longer...pretty tasty for under 30 bucks.

Blantons has become so trendy that it is hard to find...but, fortunately, many in my town don't have the taste for it, so there are almost always bottles on the shelf.

It is well worth the $50 bucks.

Old Forester Bottled in Bond is my goto for mixed drinks...strong enough to stand up to the flavors in an old fashioned and still retain it's heart.

Woodford is great for the flask while fishing.

The pappies can pound sand for all I care...not worth the price point...at least not for me. Maybe I don't have the ability to discern why they are so much better, but at this point in my life, I probably never will.

I have had several of the Wellers, but not the Antique...will grab one today and give it a go.

Fun thread

I've been on a Legacy Blended whisky kick lately. Blended by the the same guys that do Buffalo Trace. I haven't had Buffalo Trace in a few years, I might have to do a side by side comparison.

The wife and I took our anniversary trip to the coast a few weeks ago. We went to the liquor store to find something to drink. I couldn't decide, but they had a made in Oregon section. I decided that I where my bottle was coming from. Still unable to decide, my wife shoots me the are you ready to go look. So I grab a bottle of Crater Lake Rock and Rye. Its a spin off an old time, pre prohibition drink that was a shot of rye whiskey, rock candy, and maybe some dried fruit. It was surprisingly better than I thought. It went down way too easy and I finished the bottle in two evenings.

Been meaning to try the Redneck Riviera. Isn't that a Eastside Distilling product?

Yes.....

I don't care for the regular Redneck but the Granny's Reserve is very good. Have to get it Eastside Distilling or their tasting room at Clackamas Town Center only. Haven't seen it at the liquor store yet...

Toasted Carmel black velvet, better tasting than all this crap listed .

Or fireball, or cruzan blackstrap rum. Blanton's is ok but lots of better tasting stuff for cheap.

Here's one that is starting to get very popular. Be good for girl shots. Be good in a vanilla milkshake, or paired with Chambord for a PB&J...

Very popular and has been hard to find until lately. Girl shots, or a Birdy bottle...

Peanut butter whisky, nice. Crown peach wasn't very appealing to me.

Now take a crown apple shot and mix with a fireball shot, that's good stuff. Really, if you haven't tried this you should.

When you have a sore throat mix honey, hot apple cider and fireball.

I just started drinking Stein Distillery 5 year old bourbon out of Joseph OR. They also have a shop in Beaverton. Also their 9 year old rye whiskey is pretty damn good.

Good to know, haven't had a sore throat in years though since I quit chewing. Matter of fact haven't been sick hardly in years with the kids moved out also. Probably jinxed myself, gf has a bad cold/flu like one week after getting her flu shot... How's this for a sidetrack.

One of my brother's favorites. Not mine. It tastes fine, but causes my GURD to act up.

He also recommended this one a while back and I gave it a try. It was ok, but not as good as others at a lower price point.

Ya, just distribution and collaboration only...............

CREATION LEADS TO CONTRIBUTION
Our reputation for quality and innovation precedes us and in 2018 we earned the attention of John Rich, half the country duo Big and Rich, to develop a specialty whiskeys for his Redneck Riviera brand. Redneck Riviera Whiskey won a gold medal for flavor at the Los Angeles International Spirit Awards has been sold into large chain stores in numerous states. The first brand extension, Granny Rich Reserve, an extra-aged expression of the original whiskey launched on Valentine’s Day of 2019 with much ado. We are honored to be a part of this project that gives a percentage of sales proceeds to Folds of Honor, a charitable foundation that awards scholarships to spouses and children of fallen veterans.

Mrs. fop likes Fireball but fop doesn't drink as
the morning after just isn't worth it. Should say
the next 3 days aren't worth it.

How about BSB? It sounds good.
