Default Hiker rant...

I hike almost any trail I can find with my lab, Echo. I really enjoy being out to simply enjoy the outdoors and get us some exercise. However, when I come across people this stupid it drives me nuts. This trail is pretty much unknown and doesn't have a plastic bag dispenser at the trail head. There is a small group of volunteers that care for the trail. And I often do the hike with trimmers in hand. The idiot that left this brought the bag with them and left it for someone else (me) to dispose of. Much better just to kick the poop off the trail and fertilize a new plant. The bag will be around long after they are gone.......

I hike my suburban landscape everyday and this is commonplace. You can rant all day long, but it won't change a thing. People suck. Dogs aren't the problem.

I think the mindset is that someone like you would take care of it for them. Either that or they are just pigs.

I think, well I don't want to violate the AUP responding to your remark. You think, either that... You don't know anything about me, or what I think, apparently...

It's common everywhere. For some reason people think a) they'll get the bag on the way back (which never happens) b) its somebody else's job to dispose of the bag c) somebody saw their dog take a dump and felt obligated to bag it and then ditched the bag when nobody was looking.

I'm always puzzled by this behavior....when did we start telling folks there's a dog-poop-bag-fairy who will come by and pick it up?

If it’s that big of a problem leaving bags, just remove the bag dispenser.

Probably not that many dogs poop on the trail. Responsible owners will deal with their poop and/or carry there own bags. Those who aren’t probably won’t follow any rules.

Those taking care of the trail probably have to deal with other animals pooping on the trail, so it would be good to have some way to deal with that in any case. At least, on my drive into my property and other roads on my property, animals routinely poop on the road/trail. I would imagine that trail is similar.

It all depends on the "trail." If it's a short trail that's popular, I see no reason why people can't haul out the dog poop. Last Spring, I hiked 400 miles of the Appalachian Trail (broke knee at that point) and saw a lot of dogs. No one carries bags to haul out poop when the next dumping point may be four days away. Dogs are allowed to poop in the woods. I did too..

Yup... like every trailhead has garbage service. I'd rather just have poop kicked into woods as well. Its the worst along the coast trail north of La Push. Took the family up to the Norwegian Memorial last fall... every site had human scat covered with rocks.

Im always asking if folks have their cat hole trowel... most do not.

Sh**ty... literally.

What I've seen people do is bag the land mine on the way up, then pick it up on the return. No sense in carrying it if you don't have to.
Not saying that's what happened here, but it's a possibility.

I agree with you 1Pump that could be the case for sure... but I am sure I am not the only one to arrive at an empty trailhead with a pile of bags next to a post.

Yes, it’s very tough to deal with. I think one of the reasons for garbage is lack of investment by the general public, and lack of education. If there isn’t a sense of connection and a sense of pride then what is the motivation to keep something in its best condition? I often imagine how productive we would be as a society if our news channels and televisions broadcast trash heaps, invasive plants, habitat destruction, pesticide/herbicide, and pollution on a nightly basis....instead of the bullsh*t they put on the news every night that really doesn’t matter. I believe every public school system should have yearly classes focused on the local environment. If we all intimately knew our lands and learned to appreciate them we would take better of it. In the age of technology it is more important than ever to reconnect people with the world that surrounds them.

Maybe but if I wasn't hiking there and saw a bag of sh... on the trail and see stuff like that all the time while hiking I wouldn't have ranted about it...
But I do own a dog that's only 6 months old and has learned to poop off trail and has also pooped in the ocean. You'd think she was a surfer's dog from Mexico...

I hate stepping in dog sh*t whether it's on or off the trail

One advantage of having it in a bag is it's not so camouflaged

I mow and maintain an old closed off air field. I keep a path mowed down the middle so seniors from the adjacent assisted living center can have a place to walk other than on asphalt. It's used regularly by a number of walkers and some responsible dog walkers. However I have the problem with walkers that don't pick up their dog poop and more so with those that bag it up but then throw the plastic bag into the taller grass alongside the strip. Yesterday while mowing I see two people with several dogs at the far end of the strip 1/2 mile away. When I get to them I pass by two large piles of wet dog poop. I ask them why they aren't picking up their dog's poop. They reply it's not from their dogs, must have been someone else's dogs. As I had been mowing that morning and not seen anyone else I knew this was BS and told them so. They left in a huff but I reminded them they were parked on private property with a No Trespassing sign. I'm sure these two will be back with their dogs. Nothing like mowing over dog poop, a fragrance you will not soon forget.

should pick up your dog poop and all other litter. but complain as well about what portland and all the other cities and towns look like from litter all over from various people. do you throw your cigarette butts out or put them in your pocket. do you smoke on the side walk where others may have to walk through it.
do you spray pesticides that go over into someone else's property. the list goes on and on.

It will be interesting to see how the permit system effects this and other wilderness litter issues. There is the potential for a lot of people to leave more trash etc, and justify it by saying “I paid my maintenance fee so there should be an employee to clean up after me.” Not all will think this way, but there will be a percentage who do. How big will that percentage be?

I think those that actually plan ahead, in order to get their permits, are generally the more responsible hikers who are more like to be practicing "leave no trace."

Had the pleasure of picking up two complete bags of trash scattered about in my office lot this morning. Even more pleasant was that the offenders knocked over the smoker but can pole thing and made a mess of that crap.

Hey! Joshua! Next time you leave your trash, keep your name out of it!

(Full name and address withheld in case his trash can was ransacked and the true offender used our lot to go through things...)

Oh!!!! I want to place a few of those on the rivers around here. Fished the NF Lewis on Monday, and the spot was about as bad as I have ever seen it. Blatant littering too, not just a forgotten water bottle or escaped plastic bag.
