Yep, giant house. Frightening buggers. People call em "hobo spiders", but technically most of them aren't. Only well to tell is with a magnifying glass. Hobos tend to be a bit smaller, and they are poisonous.

They say Giant house spiders are good to have around since they eat smaller more venemous spiders, but I don't care. I want them all dead, kill on site.

WAY too big, fast, and scary looking.

Nooooo...don't kill them. Put your big boy pants on and tough it out. You'll survive this guy but you will be in much pain with his "look alike". (just kidding) Get a glass jar, a 3x5 card, put the glass over the spider, slip the card between the wall and the glass. Take him outside...catch and release.

Had an 8-legged visitor here the other day after a heavy rain. Fortunately this friend stayed outside and ran up under my patio table. Haven't been able to pin it down -- possibly a wolf spider or a funnel web. About three inches leg to leg, hairy, with tiny white dots on the legs and banded leg joints. We are on the cusp of tarantula season here in the desert. I like those guys. Mellow.

Saw a Nat Geo program a couple days ago about poisonous stuff in Australia. They featured their local Funnel Spider. That’s one bad customer. We don’t have anything in N. America that compares to that beast. The worst of our worries is the Brown Recluse. Everything else is pretty tame poison wise.

the funnel web spiders stay back in the funnel shaped web and pop out if something intrudes on the web. hard for a person to get bit if even a little careful/ fun to stick a piece poof grass in front and watch him pop out at you. you cant help but jump. lots of things in Australia want to bite you.
been there many times and never got close to being bit by anything other than a mosquito. which they call mossies.

Them there scorpions hurt worser (yep WORSER!). than any spider bite I ever got.
Got nailed twice by scorpions while residing in Fla.
Not to mention the dang fire ants.
Hows the Mogollon treating you? And the Hummer birds?

6 legs ain't 1/2 as bad as eight.

Woke the other morning to an 8-legger near my pillow. No more!

Once watched a genuine Black Widow munchin' on a hornet/bee under my porch & took 'em both out.

Dey ain't house pets 'round my digs, no matter what dad tried to taught me.

I found one of these in my basement a few years ago. Did some research and fond that they aren't good to have around. Can cause damage similar to termites, if I remember correctly.

Don't remember what they are called, though...

I was thinking Caddis fly or salmon fly larva.
Good bait.
Been calling the caddis fly larva perriwinkles for years. And using them for trout bait.
Man those rainbows love em. Never knew their true name till recently.

God I hate spiders. I dont know why I keep opening this thread. If that black widow had crawled out of a hose I picked up it wouldnt need to bite me for me to die. I had a encounter a couple weeks ago with the biggest house spider I've ever seen. It was a terminator and refused to die as I sprayed it with a bottle of some bug killer stuff..it walked me down about 12 ft before finally giving in but as soon as I hit it with the spray it ran right at me and would not stop. I'm thinking of moving to the artic.

We have them here on the west coast also. Maybe not in the same numbers but they are here. The only one I've seen here in person though came in a bag of grapes from Safeway. I'm always super cautious with grapes now.

The other night the wife and I were laying in bed watching TV and a spider dropped from the ceiling right on her face. I have never seen her move so fast in my life. She ABSOLUTELY hates spiders. Glad I saw where she flung it so I could kill it before it ran off. She wouldn't have let me go to bed until it was dead

I'm not a spider expert but every time I find one I like to id it. The one that Tinman posted looks like a funnel weaver. They are pretty harmless to humans. The big beetle looks like a California root borer beetle. I had one of those show up around our house a few years back. That sucker was a good 2 or more inches in length...just the body.

Um, lots and lots of black widows in the Rogue Valley, and I killed several around the house in Salem. The story I have heard is that they have been "planted" all over the country thanks to freight -- especially rail freight. What really surprised me about the widows as I got to know them is just how fast they are.

On her face - COME ON! And she's still alive? I would have had a freaking heart attack on that - would be with my maker now.
I swear, anyone who thinks spiders are "ok" indoors has not had this or something else bad happen to them from a spider.

A few years back, I was bit on my right cheek (face...lol) by a spider whilst I slept. I have no idea what kind of spider felt I was so annoying by just sleeping, but the juices it injected into me, dissolved the tissues and created a hole in my face that lasted a month!

Kill em' all if they dare to enter my home! I don't believe in that they need to be inside to kill other insects - I don't have any other insects in my home! And please, no trying to capture them to place them back outside. I've seen too many get away by an engineer trying that method at work!

P.S. If you spray a mixture of peppermint oil and water around the doors and windows of your abode, it tends to keep the spiders from coming in. They do not like that smell and go in the opposite direction. I just add 4-5 drops of the stuff to a small spray bottle of water.

Default Re: Any Spider knowers out there?

If you must, there is a product called "Home Defense" that claims to not be harmful to people/pets. Read the label cause I tend to not keep things altogether straight anymore. Believe it or not, I have used it around doors, windows, fireplaces, etc and it did seem to keep them out.
