No doubt some good breeders in the area but IMHO I wouldn't limit myself to an area as small as Portland. I also suggest doing your home work and research breeders as much as you can if you haven't done so already. Good luck on your search. My $

What Finn-icky said. If you limit the geographic location, you may limit quality. Llama77 is about the hunting variety, not pets. If I wanted a hunter, he’d be my local go to guy.

I have a 2 1/2 year old, 58lb male from Minoggie Kennels on Sauvie Island. He's been a fantastic dog, and Kim and Doug Shade at Minoggie are first-class people. He's a hunter, and he's very high energy, but he loves ya like a golden when he's in the house and he's great with kids.

Personal friends of mine operate Citrine Kennels an exclusive Golden Retriever kennel, on Deer Island, just north of Columbia City. You can get some idea of their operation at www.citrine.net. These are show quality dogs and the best looking Goldens I have ever seen.

This no reflection on Citrine or any other specific breeder but when you start dealing with show dogs (of any breed) there can be a lot of unwanted defects that come with the package. Do lots of research into Goldens to understand what those issues are so you know how to interview breeders. Remember, the poorest judge of a dog is its owner. When money is involved, people will say most anything. Take breeder claims with a grain of salt. I would trust Minoggie before any show dog breeder. Be aware, Minoggie may not sell a dog to someone who isn’t a hard core hunter.

Is it possible that a hunting dog breeder could recommend a pet breeder?

What kind of dog does the OP want? A pet or a hunter or a show dog? Or some combination?

Good looking dog. I'm not a great fan of the white ones.

Hard to imagine a better choice and it's not either/or. Lots of hunting breeds are tough as nails hunters and sweet with the family. People that have bred them in this area for a while know who and who not to send you too for what you want. Don't forget the pics.

We had a golden for 9 years. He was without a doubt the smartest and most loving dog I have ever had. He could learn anything. Including how to alert his people about "intruders at the door" without waking the baby because mom didn't like that. However, the poor guy had the itchy-est backside in the world. Do your research to avoid getting an animal with any number of genetic problems.

Friend had one and what a wonderful dog. The only downside was he was a kleptomaniac. He would steal everything he could from the neighbors and hide it under the house. Actually did that with a cat my dog had killed. I remember one guy crawling under the house to retrieve his cell phone as it was ringing.

I would echo what a few have said. Goldens are prone to some cancers and other health problems. Looking at health clearance and genetics pays off. I found mine in Idaho 7 years ago and she has had zero health problems and is a fantastic hunting dog and family dog. Good luck and have fun look8ng for the right one!

And llama77 helped me find her! However he is off trying to kill the bull of his dreams right now so he might be hard to get a hold of for awhile
