Default Report on Archery ELK in Starkey Exp. Forest

Looking for reports on the Archery elk hunt in the Starkey Experimental Forest, which closed today (Sunday, Sept. 20).

My son and I both have cow elk tags there, Oct. 10-18.

We would both be appreciative of any helpful info.

Thank you.

Can’t say I’ve hunted the Exp Forest but why would it close a week before everyone else?

It used to be a very very short season and well before any good rut activity, if I remember correctly. Why? That is a question for ODFW. Im guessing it's due to when they were doing elk studies they wanted peak rut to be undisturbed. That's a complete guess, and then would beg the question, with the focus now being on mule deer and getting elk numbers down, why not extend it to peak rut? Me don't know.

I've never killed the monster bull of my dreams but have seen a few out cruising timber or deer hunting.

You know what they say..."you can't eat horn".

My dream now is to see, hear and smell those tender breakfast steaks sizzling in the pan. Hoping to replace that Costco chicken with some
cow elk steaks!!!

Any fresh Starkey Exp. Forest intel out there???

Have you called the Bio there? I was considering the bow hunt a few years ago. I talked to him. He seemed pretty knowledgeable. He had pretty good population numbers. I remember hearing that they were going to scale down the elk and work on mule deer. Maybe that's why you have a cow tag? Regardless, he should have population information. He should also know where they hang out (I think they did a lot of GPS tagging studies). I'd get out there early opening morning... I'm betting you'll get some steaks.

This. I talked with the head bio last year as I was looking into getting the bull tag. He told me that they are trying to decrease the elk to under 100. I believe he said in 2018 there was approx 400-450, hence the reason why all the cow tags. They will have some mule deer studies going on now. With that said, he also mentioned they are going to catch and transplant some of the elk out of there also. Last years, the cow tag success rate was around 25% for all the hunts, which seems fairly poor to me for that hunt. Seems like a lot of tags for that area, I’d guess getting off the roads might be your best option. Best of luck

I touched base with the game biologist for this hunt area.

He was kind enough to give me some info.

My son and I will be going 'deep'.

We might even spike camp, if my son has his way.
He's the gung-ho outdoorsman that I used to carry in my back pack.
Funny how we've switched roles now.
