Pro Bass Hall of Fame Announces 2007 Inductees

HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas---Four legendary anglers, including three credited with innovations that changed the sport of bass fishing, have been named as inductees into the Professional Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, the Hall's Board of Directors announced today.
The list of distinguished anglers and fishing industry leaders includes:

Basil Bacon of Springfield, Mo., is a nine-time qualifier of the prestigious CITGO Bassmaster Classic and a three-time national tournament winner. During his more than three decades of professional fishing, he has been credited with several innovations to help fishermen catch more bass, including the thumb-bar and the flipping switch, which have become standard equipment on many top-of-the-line baitcasting reels. In addition, Bacon invented the first "flippin'" deck for bass boats. This raised casting platform is now standard equipment on every bass boat built. Basil is also the creator of such fishing lures as "The Bacon Rind" soft plastic creature lure, and "The Wakin' Bacon" spinnerbait.

Stan Fagerstrom of Sun Lakes, Arizona, is a multitalented angler who is as well known as an expert caster as he is a widely published outdoor writer. For more than 50 years, Fagerstrom has traveled the world to write about nearly every fish that swims. His expertise in bass fishing enabled him to write articles for every major outdoor magazine, and he was one of the first writers to embrace and publicize the sport of professional bass fishing. In addition, Fagerstrom is known internationally as "The Master Caster," a title given for his uncanny ability to cast practice plugs into tiny targets ranging from coffee cups to people's shirt pockets. His casting demonstrations have taken him all over the world, entertaining audiences from Japan to Europe.

Bill Norman, who founded the Arkansas lure company that bears his name, created several of today's top bass lures, including the Little N, the DD22 crankbait and the N-Ticer lipless crankbait. After growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas, Norman worked in a school bus factory, where he learned the manufacturing trade. He applied those skills to lure making, and his lure company sponsored many of the early stars of the pro circuits. He is credited with establishing the first tournament pro team. Norman, who passed away on August 7, 1995, will be inducted posthumously.

Dee Thomas of Brentwood, Calif., is known as the "Father of the Flippin'." A consistent winner from the earliest days of tournament fishing, Thomas perfected the technique of "Tule Dippin' " in his homestate waters. When tournament organizers outlawed his long, homemade rods, he created the flippin' technique to place jigs into hard-to-reach, thick cover. He ventured east to compete on the B.A.S.S. Tournament Trail in 1975, winning the second tournament he entered, the Arkansas Invitational on Bull Shoals Reservoir. His Flippin' technique quickly caught on nationwide and has become a mainstay of top professional anglers as well as recreational fishermen hunting for huge bass.

The four men will be enshrined into the Professional Bass Fishing Hall of Fame during the 2007 CITGO Bassmaster Classic. The Professional Bass Fishing Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of bass fishing and establishing a shrine to the men, women and companies that have taken this sport to anglers around the world.
