I’m pleasantly surprised that all the fish I’ve heard of so far have been hatchery fish. I think I started last season with 5 wild fish in a row, and the season total to my boat was nearly 70% wilds. Heck, even my first fish at Drano last year was wild (rare there).

Did a few passes at Sellwood late afternoon yesterday for a shakedown run to try out some new toys. Not much to report other than a small army of crew kids descending around 5, making for a long run back up to Milwaukie. Anyone know when the rest of that dock is set to go in?

2036? Seriously, I complained about the dock to the city last year, but they don’t seem to care. At best, it is inconvenient, but it becomes dangerous when busy or when the water is low.

If the City of Milwaukie could have their way they would rid themselves of the trashy old crusty fishermen and cater to the wakeboarding crowd of Nice Weather.

Fished the tide exchange yesterday (Monday) around HOC 0/0, scope was blank. Two other boats around.

I am witness to two hatchery Chinook yesterday. Both were easy 20 pounders.

I didn’t look at the gauge, but viz seemed worse today than I expected. I went with a friend to shake-down his boat. We fished from about 10-5 between Sellwood and the Spaghetti Factory with no luck. It was breezy at times, but a nice day overall. It was good practice, and I was just glad to be out in the sun after a long winter.

Thanks Brently. That’s a sweet old Almar you’ve got!

Low water at the coast... I might have to dust off the springer gear and join you guys down between Milwaukie and Sellwood. The weather has been spectacular!

Steelhead fishing at the coast was incredible early this week. Hard to leave "catching" for "fishing".

Good luck, go get 'em!

AnnaDraMoss: Please share a metallic charcoal Moonglo shot on the water please; fresh chrome if possible.

How’s the water color in the Willamette today?

I wonder if all the mud from the Gorge area isn’t a result of the fires the past few years and the erosion is just really kicking in? Few deadheads in the Columbia now also.

I have 2 possible days to fish my local waters in the Columbia before it closes, tomorrow and next Saturday the 29th.

Then it ls a 30-50+ mile boat ride each trip. Good thing I like boating.

Glad you asked that here.
It took a lot of will power not to add to your comment on the other thread....
Today the Willamette's palette resembles that of a "Dusty Walnut" in a matte satin finish.
See, that has nothing to do with turbidity. Right?
Boat going back to it's slip today.

The current turbidity in the Portland area of the Columbia is the result of the flooding upriver a few weeks ago. Hopefully it isn't the new normal. I only got one day of good visibility on the Columbia last year during springer season but it was enough.

Pulled 7 to 11 shift today fishing HOC. Visibility is ~2 feet but improving through the morning. There were about dozen boats working the area. Saw 1 caught and kept right in front of us. Dime bright! Nothing for our 2 rods. At least I can say I saw a fish caught instead of hearsay. Will be back next week...

They exist!
Question (if you don't mind me asking): trolling with 1 oz of lead, or some other technique?

My report: 1230-1630 at HOC, 0/0. Heard of a couple caught before I got there. Nice afternoon on the water.

Fisherman Rick,

Holding the rod and bouncing a herring on a shelf somewhere above a bridge. The fish bit real lethargic like, he came up and sat with the bait in his mouth and didn't want to turn with the bait. I could've been using more lead but I like fishing light.

This afternoons water clarity resembled that of a Pureed West Indian Avocado reduced with a basil infused Lucini extra virgin olive oil, lightly splashed with fine ground lemongrass.
A very fishable complex stain which even most discriminately refined angler could appreciate.

I snuck out this afternoon, a little windy, not too bad. The Sheriff stopped and said hello. Didn't check my license, just wanted to see my safety equipment, throwable pfd, whistle and fire extinguisher. Asked if I had registration and boater ed card, but he didn't make me take it out. I've been waiting to get checked, I'm over prepared so I can relax when they show up, nice guys!

I like it when they do that!
Nothing worse than making you pull all of your gear and then floating a mile down stream while they give you a proctological exam. Thirty minutes later you're finally fishing again.
I usually fish away from them and I'm usually successful at that.
Got checked two weeks ago and they were super cool. I'd caught and released two legal chinook (not on the Columbia....) looking for a bigger one. They never made me pull my downriggers and stop fishing. Just pointed out I could've kept them...
Told me they've seen me around a bunch and I'm legit. They motored away and I kept fishing.

Nobody questions your line of B.s? You must be a ex duck lineman that scare the shot out of the sellwood pros. Unless they believe you and changed to downriggers after 40 years. Hooking two keepers and letting em go in Feb. Must be a bass guy. Charlies do smell a little stinky.

Before calling me a liar read my post close....
I didn't say where I caught them and infact pointed out I didn't catch them in the Columbia. There's places to target chinook that isn't in the Columbia or the Willamette this time of the year. Some places are obvious some are less so (there's a tiny hint in the picture below).

Fished Friday afternoon for a couple hours in a friends boat. Hooked up and fought a fish for a few minutes before it came off. Fish grabbed the bait and took off like it's butt was on fire. Hot fish. Whole herring in shallow water. We are thinking it was a steelhead as the fish was all over the place, including in friends line before he could reel up

I'll take a hookup on my first trip of the year. Hopefully, it doesn't take 10 more trips for my next chance

Didn't see or hear of anything else for the other boats in the fleet.

The harbor was a mine field of debris on Saturday. Vis was poor. Shake down run for us. Around 20 boats working the HOC. No action for us or seen. Didn't run my pump for fear of sucking something in. So it was just the kicker and some continued practice with the electric bow mount. Beautiful day - lousy water conditions.

Quick pre-work trip this morning around HOC, 0/0. Two other boats around, water still kinda brownish-green, but getting better.

Got skunked today fishing from 3 to 530 trying to make it happen on the incoming, which with this low water is making for a lack of current. I got my fish the other day right as the current started picking up on the outgoing.

This evening's water clarity report for those who couldn't make to the river to see in person.
With the turbidity scale at 4.9, the clarity has lightened a bit from Saturday's report to resemble mint reduction a fraction thicker than Starbuck's Iced Matcha Lemonade with a small amount of vigorously blended premium Japanese honey.

You and me both brother. I want to see another Springer tail against the back drop of a Dogwood tree just starting to bloom.

Nice to see all of the usual suspects out around Sellwood today! Saw about a dozen boats, weather was nice, though a bit chilly early on.

I did not see any nets fly, but I did see a few fishy looking marks at about the 20ft line on the graph.

Good luck!
