Default Camas Report - 10/7

Fished on the highway 14 side of the Washougal river by the pump house. Only saw about 10 different people from 3:00pm til 6:30pm. Threw spinners for a while off the stone areas by the bridge(metallic blue, chartreuse & green). Only had one bump. Switched to my Amerman cured eggs around 5:00 in some shallower waters over by the pump house. Got one good hit but that was it. The fish were jumping here and there pretty often. All tules from what I could catch quick glances of. There was one person that got a big hit - the fish peeled line for what seemed 10 seconds then *nothing*. Fish was off the line. DOH! Few other people had bumps but that was it. Pretty quiet.

There was one guy when I fist got there that looked to be snaggin and stopped about 10 minutes after I got there and a few others showed up that were fishing properly. There may be hope for some of those snaggers yet.

Was good to get the line wet.

Thanks for the reality check, Rob. I'm still a bit of a greenhorn.

Rob,

Isn't the Hwy 14 area actually the Washougal Slough vs. the Washougal River?

The river mouth is a couple hundred yards away.

From the East end of the bridge draw a straight line to the West end of the pump house and thats the line everything East of that is the Washougal everything West is the columbia.

I fished that area on Monday. Saw fish rolling.

I did notice a new sign that the WDFW posted about 100 yards into the Camas slough. It is a warning that if you fish in the slough you need a WA. fishing license. (the sign was posted about 1 mile below or west of where that blue line is in the photo.)

I guess the battle continues as to whether the slough is part of the Columbia or Wa is claiming it as WA water.

So if you do not have a WA license you should resolve this before fishing there.

WRO

I have never in 25 years of fishing the Washougal seen a salmon caught on just a corkie that wasn't snagged in that river! I don't know what happens on other coho runs but on the Washougal you see two kinds of people fishing corkies.

1 snaggers 2 people who don't know how to fish for salmon.
I never said that coho wouldn't hit them I said the people using them on the Washougal are using them to snag.. it's the people not the lure.. I personally have never used corkies for coho and never would..

Rob,
just because your using a corkie, doesn't mean your snagging, I have caught quite a few coho on just an orange corkie... yes hooke inside the mouth. Now if its tied behind the hook thats a different story

ROB,I have caught coho with a corkie and egg and just with a plain orange corkie,I wasn't snagging !!, I have caught steelhead useing a corkie or a corkie and egg and I wasn't snagging YOU can't say everybody who uses a corkie is a snagger !!
I don't know who or what made you the expert on snagging fish ??.I've also fished the Washougal for well over 25 years and know lots of people who fish with nothing but corkies or corkies and eggs.I think it depends on how long the leader is before you say that someone who uses corkies is a snagger !!,I think your WAY out of line calling everyone who uses a corkie a snagger !!,WAY OUT OF LINE.

Funny story that is somewhat related to this thread.

I was bobber fishing one day this year in an experimental spot and down comes a green corki just slowly passing by. that green corki was sucked down and spit out at least 6 times by small smolt etc.. as it floated by.

I almost always use eggs/bait etc - but it is possible (and after seeing that) beleive that they will snap at small color etc.... I mean what do you think a streamer fly is doing when a fish takes it?

Fished the Camas Slough yesterday and caught a hatchery Coho. As I was filling out my Washington Tag, I noticed there was no location code number for "Camas Slough". What am I supposed to put in the location box? Columbia River or Washougal River. I don't feel that it is Washougal River water and if it's Columbia River(which I think it is), then an Oregon license should be legal. What gives Washington?

Cool arial photo.....I fished...right...there.. on Tuesday and got one serious take down on a bobber and eggs...floating below the HWY 14 bridge. I was talking to my daughter when I look up and my bobber was gone...where did it go..I asked Shelby...AAAHHHHH she says....and I find my bobber re-surfacing...and the vast majority of the eggs were gone....DANG. Only serious take down and I was chatting. That's alright..had fun with my daughter. Next time I guess. There are so many fish jumping in that area..

Thank you dawhunt,
Salmon will argrssively take drifted corkies, corky yarn combos, and corkies and eggs.. Rob just has snagger fever and thinks that anyone not fishing like him is snagging.. I also am insulted that rob thinks that because I am fishing corkies I do not know how to fish for salmon, GET A CLUE. I have caught more salmon on corkies and corky derivitives this season (inside the mouth) than alot of other fishermen out there.

rob,

that's bs about the corkey/snagging theory. just because you think it, don't make it snaggin. if you called the game people and told them someone was using a corkey, they'd hang up.

Northriver if you were fishing out of a boat and were west of the pump house you had to be in the columbia. But be advised if your fishing in the camas slough you have to have a WASHINGTON LIS.!! they will ticket you if caught,if you were fishing off the bank east of the bridge or pump house you were fishing in the washougal river. You still need a Washington lis.Hope this helps ya.

I was in a boat and I have a Washington license. I just wasn't sure which location code to use. Thanks for your input.

you guys need to read more carefully. I did not say that coho cannot be caught on corkies. I said On the WASGOUGAL!! I have never seen a coho or a chinook for that matter caught legally with ONLY a corkie and that everyone I have seen fishing that river with only corkies were snagging!!
I will say this though.. everyone fishing corkies in the washougal at Oak park, hathaway, sany swimming hole, Cougar creek, The big eddy, and the steel bridge is snagging or not catching anything.. You can be as offended as you want but thats the truth..

Too late for this year but next september I will take ANYONE on a guided tour of the Washougal and I guarentee that we will see no one fishing corkies and cathing fish on them who is not snagging.

Anyway it's not worth arguing about if you have them (salmon) taking corkies more power to ya. I have just never seen it on the Washougal..
