Default Pacific Skates...where do you buy them?

I have a request from a friend in Asia who's looking to import Pacific Skates in large quantities as in 40' containers. I have no idea where to start. Do people target them or are they just a by-catch? I would appreciate any help.

I get a lot of strange emails from people in Asia too.. usually offering me money if I give them my bank account number though.

Are these a delicacy or something?

Call up one of the BIG fish companies, like Trident or Bornstein.

They are mainly a by-catch. Skates and Rays. Method of processing is to cut and pack the wings. Some places in the Bering have higher numbers but really it isn't a huge catch. Takes a fair number to make a 20kg pan.

Any of the H & G companies will have some catch of them but will usually go to the buyer of one of the targets species. What part of Asia?

They're good eating for sure.

They were on the menu at South Park, Saturday evening.

Years ago I watched people fish for them at Bar View.

We've caught a couple in Tillamook B and one in Nehalem B and a number of them while fishing for halibut in SE AK. They are probably by-catch to the halibit fishery or maybe draggers.

Contact Bering Select Seafood in Seattle. They are the marketing division of Clipper Seafood. There is a website with the contact info or you can PM me and I'll hook you up. We don't target skates but they are a bi catch that we put aboard on a regular basis.

When I go to England I always buy skate wings from a fish and chip shop its my favorite BUT if it has not been handled right when caught it can taste of ammonia, nowadays its hard to find as not all shops sell it as it costs more than most other fish, Atlantic cod is more expensive than salmon right now

When we Halibut fish out deep it's either a halibut, dog shark, arrow toothed flounder or Pacific cod but we always seem to get into the skates and they can be every other fish on some days...

Kind of a let down when you're hoping for a nice size halibut and one of those comes up intead, especially from 750'.

Why should they be any different than all the other fish in the sea?

Personally, I'd tell him to try the roller rink if he wants skates....but that's just me...

Skates are delicious, but it takes a pretty big one to get a meal. As someone stated above, the wing meat is cut into circular pieces and sold as scallops to many uneducated consumers here in the states. I don't know where to buy them in mass quantity though.
