Default Official 2019 Fall Salmon, Non-Buoy 10, Report Thread

The lower Columbia near Kalama is 70.5F and clearish green. The two days I fished at the Cowlitz mouth were slow, with very few fish caught by trollers. I threw the proven kitchen sink of tools at them for no bites.

Today my wife decided to join me for her first day of fall salmon. She wanted to fish near Kalama using her rod and reel and she chose a wobbler she named “The Pelican” (one of our most successful for 3-4 years now - a faceted Chrome Brad’s Extreme wobbler with blue, chartreuse and green accents. Within ten minutes of bouncing it back .... URB ON!

22 lbs.

0/1 for 2 rods this afternoon. We waited for the incoming and fished Willow Grove to Kalama and back. Stuck to 360's and Stupid baits. 1 on for a few good tuggs then gone. We fished 3pm to 9:30 and the last trailer to leave Willow Grove. Marked fish here and there but not what I was hoping for. Water temp was at 71 even at the mouth of the Cowlitz. Seen 1 fish landed right at 8pm at the mouth of the Cowlitz. Maybe skip 1 more weekend and stay home and tie flies LOL.

Fished Longview Bridge to Cowlitz mouth Friday Aug 9th. Two rods, trolling 8am-1pm on the incoming. No joy. One drive-by just south of cowlitz mouth in 10ft of water. Used herring in a helmet, sardines in oil on ProTroll flashers and Brads superbait. Disappointing to say the least. Man, watch out for those sand bars. They come on you real fast. Probably15/20 trailers only in the parking lot. I saw only one chinook caught. The fish checker at Rainer said he only had 2 steelhead released and one retained jack reported. Long drive and a tough day.

Today was the culmination of 5 years of working, saving, re-motoring and new electronics in my buddy’s boat. It was his first shake-down run salmon fishing in it and it’s first time in the water with its new/used Yamaha 115 and 8.

We ran upstream of Kalama past low slack/incoming about 9:30 am and I let the 16 oz. weight down with a virgin Super Series flasher and Mt. Dew Brads SBCP and plain Chicken of the Sea.

Inspired by another thread I chose to dust off a classic: I let the levelwind out 6 passes on the Penn 209 and it’s Fenwick FS 85C . 60 Ft of 71 F water.

Within ten minutes we had a fish on!

That’s good Karma.

Jack Chinook.

He learned a few things and will be upgrading his anchor.

Fish are moving upriver. The kids caught these today and my wife released a hatchery steelhead.

They hit both the original brads cut plug stuffed with tuna and the gold bladed 3.5 spinner.

Fished from 8am -8pm yesterday. Trolled all day.... went 1/5 was solo all morning and managed to lose 3 fish (all popped off before getting close to the boat). A buddy showed up around 3:30 and not 20 second in bam fish in the boat. Half an hour later we lost another one that seemed like it was going to be really nice. About 40 boats in the morning and counted 7 fish all day. 5 of those were caught by 2 boats. Not very hot yet but I have had 8 chances in 2 trips on one rod. Happy to get another one to the boat since this will be my last trip for the fall. Now time for college!

Thanks Man !,
I’m thinking of hitting Scap this week, the tide chart shows hi tide mid morning so no 3 am wake up.
Plus it’s my first time doing the Corn pass detour.
I never got around to buying barbed siwash hooks so a few killer wobblers will be release friendly , besides I might be altering the swing and or screwing with ma mojo.

Finally caught a dang salmon. I was just about to quit after fishing the outgoing tide all day and it was switching to high tide. Cleaning in the boat and scrubbing the goo off my plugs and the pole started dancing. Nice 31 inch Coho to start the fall season.

The detour is a nightmare. Be careful pulling a boat on Newberry. It's narrow, windy and you'll be sharing it with a few hundred angry commuters, especially on the way home.

Me, I don't think I'll pull a boat over that hill again with the traffic..

Good luck.

X2

I took a drive yesterday to Suavie Island to get some good sweet corn and a cold beer. That road is narrow, windy, some stretches barely have a shoulder or no shoulder at all. Won't be pulling the Arima on that road. Corn pass opens September 22nd according to the reader. board. Hopefully some ho still around then.

Sat in a hog line yesterday from 8-130. We didn't get bit, but out of eight boats there were 3 or 4 hooked only one successfully landed that we saw. Went over to check out the improvements at Sand Island LLC. Interesting what they're trying to do over there.

Fished on the hook below St. Helens on Sunday. Only saw 2 fish caught in about 8 hours. Wobbler fishing produced this first ever Chinook.

Mouth of the Cowlitz report for 8/20. In three hours trolling we saw 1 caught and a jack released. Five hours on the hook with wobblers we saw about 6 caught for maybe sixty boats. (One lucky boat got 2!) We had 1 drive by for 3 rods. Fish checker at Rainier had checked 15 fish when we were pulling out at 2:15.

Default Official 2019 Fall Salmon, Non-Buoy 10, Report Thread

I’ve been fishing about half-time lately: a full day + a half day then a day off, and switching back and forth between the Kalama area and the mouth of the Cowlitz. It’s been slow overall seeing from 0 - 6 fish caught for many boats. After 11 hours at the mouth of the Cowlitz yesterday we trolled most of the way home to Kalama and got two takedowns at Steelscape on 360 Flashers . Didn’t stick. Back at it today with a later start.

Go down 26 and back up HWY 30. I did it last weekend going from Scappoose to Garibaldi and back. added about 20 minutes but much easier on the stress level.

The detours all suck if you are pulling anything.

Plus it’s my first time doing the Corn pass detour.
I never got around to buying barbed siwash hooks so a few killer wobblers will be release friendly , besides I might be altering the swing and or screwing with ma mojo.

Also, can you keep hatchery and native chinook jacks? And only clipped coho jacks?

A day late, but sat on hook Tuesday 9-15:00, only saw three caught for the 15 boats we were watching.
Detour wasn’t too bad.
Might hit it again tomorrow.
