So excited! Just to clarify Oregon beaches are open starting Jan 1st, is that correct? We are staying over in Arch Cape and probably going to hit Del Ray on Friday.

This is from ODFW website:
During the recent assessment, biologists found a razor clam population dominated by small clams 2.5 to 3-inches long. The extension of the closure at least through October will allow staff to collect feedback from stakeholders pertaining to potential management options to minimize the waste of undersize clams. Options include extending the closure through the winter (until March 1) to give clams time to grow into a size suitable for harvest.

Nice to see Kalaloch finally get some digs! Hope that means things have improved significantly. Maybe have to schedule a fishing/clam digging weekend on the O.P.!

Good luck and good digging in 2019, all!

Anyone make it out y'day before the weather blew up?

Tonight is absolutely howling.

Tomorrow is forecast for combined seas of 20+ft.

Saturday looks like the first decent weather window.

The clam population is mostly small clams, from what I've been told. They are giving them a chance to get to a more desirable size for harvest. From what I read, March will be the soonest we can (possibly) dig there. With the exception of the dig they just allowed, which doesn't appear to have been very good.

I'm hoping for some Spring digs, but really want the clams to get good sized first.

There won't be much digging on LB. The TAC (total allowable catch) for Long Beach this year is only 333,557 clams or 22,337 limits. Figure in 10% for wastage and you get around 20,000 digger trips. The Long Beach Razor Clam Festival this year is on Saturday April 21. Last year during the festival weekend there were 14,500 and 16,000 diggers on the two days.

I'd be surprised if LB opens at all before the Razor clam festival. If it does, it might be a Fri-Sat dig, rather than a Sat-Sun dig like last year.

Personally given the potential crowds and clams size, I'll wait until October, your mileage may vary.

Made it out BEFORE the marine weather blew up tonight for easy limits for my crew of three on the north beach. It was a CAT light kinda night, but mild surf with an east wind made spotting them pretty easy along the waterline... shows were popping up 6-8 at a time with each POUND! It wasn't 10 minute limits, but when you can take an avg of 3 clams each draw out, you get to limits in fairly short order.

Looking forward to panko'd clams and eggplant for dinner tomorrow night.

Easy limits both Sat and Sun nights.

Hit the south beach for a break in the weather Saturday afternoon. Best results came from pounding in the surf and following each draw out. A few surges got folks wet and one intrepid ol'duffer got bowled over 3 times but was able to get up and keep going.

Sunday evening was clear and calm, virtually no wind or surf on the north beach. No pounding needed as clams were readily revealing themselves without coaxing. Lots of V-wakes with each draw as they were neckin' by the dozen. Eenie meenie miney moh?

Shucked and cut.... time to get rinsin'

The butter clams were all small that I could find in netarts. Maybe same thing causing the small razors in Oregon? But there were some nice gapers and cockles. Made for a great fresh chowder last night and now on to the crabs tonight. Really busy with 3 other people clamming besides us on a lunar eclipse night.

Did the long drive to twin harbors for the dig tonight and was rewarded with a decent limit of clams. Had to work pretty hard for them. Most of ours were about medium size.

The weather wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but the surf was a little rough.

Slam-dunk limits for my crew today. Got mine in under 10 minutes.

Virtually all in the 4.5 inch class with ONE lonely clam over 5 inches.

Photobucket has my account held hostage, so no new pics.

Sure hope to make it down for a dig or two! Those last clams were about the best tasting clams I've ever eaten! All medium sized.

Sure hope to make it down for a dig or two! Those last clams were about the best tasting clams I've ever eaten! All medium sized.

There is NO FAT in a mollusk
Pure muscle

Shellfish: nutrition
A healthy alternative to meat, shellfish provide high-quality protein and an array of important vitamins and minerals, as well as omega-3 fatty acids. Shellfish are naturally low in calories, but how you prepare them is key to a healthy diet. For example, a 3-ounce serving of boiled or steamed shrimp has only 85 calories. An equivalent portion of breaded, deep-fried shrimp, on the other hand, packs about 240 calories, due to the oil used in frying. In the case of clams, the calories go from about 125 for steamed to 200 for fried.
Shellfish are also low in saturated fat. Some types of shellfish have moderate to high amounts of dietary cholesterol. But research now indicates that dietary cholesterol doesn’t raise your blood cholesterol levels as much as saturated fat—thus it’s less of a health risk. Many types of shellfish—crabs, scallops, mussels, clams, and lobster, among them—are actually slightly lower in cholesterol than chicken or beef.

Where have you seen that Long Beach is open on Sunday. On the Websites I've accessed it does not list Long Beach as open

Another Release with a correction..

Apparently dates were posted saying there was a dig Saturday at LB

Here is what Dan said..

CORRECTION: The razor clam dig at Long Beach is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 17, not Saturday as previously stated. Please refer to this version of the news release.

The dates are posted several time in previous posts,,

The upcoming dig is approved on the following beaches, dates, and evening low tides:

Feb. 15, Friday; 3:11 p.m.; 0.4 feet; Twin Harbors, Mocrocks

Feb. 20, Wednesday; 7:14 p.m.; -1.3 feet; Twin Harbors
Feb. 21, Thursday; 7:56 p.m.; -0.8 feet; Twin Harbors

Anyone have a source? The links posted don’t include Long Beach. Maybe there’s something newer out there that I haven’t been able to find.

It is still scheduled to open March 1st. Don't expect much in size. According to the ODFW commission presentation given at this months meeting, the average size is 3.5 inches as of the beginning of February. Might be 3.66 by March 1st.

Clam
I spoke with a very nice person at WDFW Montesano yesterday and she echoed what ODFW said, in regard to clam sizes on the Long Beach peninsula. She said the population appears to be good and getting better, but that it might take a couple of years before they are back to where they were.

She also said the further North you go on the peninsula, the better grade of clams you'll find.

Good luck and good digging, if you go!
