Wife and I are looking at getting a truck and camper combo so we can tow a boat and go camping. Needs a shower and toilet. Looking at get a fairly new truck and best deal on camper we can get. If some of you experienced people out there can help me with the learning curve on this maybe I can do it right the 1st time.
I have a Host Everest 3 slide camper. It sits on a Ford 350 DRW, stable loads and air bags with in cabin controls and an air compressor with tank mounted under the truck, Tork Lift tie downs with fast guns.
That's a unreal camper, we looked at one down here on a lot. The inside space is unbelievable for a truck camper. The price is one thing I could not handle, and I didn't think towing my Skipjack was realistic, even with my Ram drw. Maybe a alloy boat in the 19-20' range is what I was guessing,,,gregg
If your planing on leaving camper on truck all the time, why not just get a small motor home instead. Price might be a bit much, but you would have a better “home” to camp in and more room inside.
I've had a truck and camper for over 25 years, and pull a boat or ATV trailer. My present one is a Ram 3500 with Arctic fox 9.9, dry bath, towing a 20ft Customweld. Don't short hit on the truck. I like the 3500 with airbags. Due to the total weight, I've cracked 4 different after market rims, so went back to the factory rims and had them powdercoated. Be sure to have a class 5 hitch. With a 10 foot camper, you'll need an 18 inch hitch extension. Make sure it's solid, not hollow, or get a superhitch extension. Be sure to get the best E rated tires you can with the toughest sidewalls. There is a lot of weight on those rear tires. As for the camper, a metal frame is definitely worth getting. Arctic fox started metal frames in 2005. I'd stay under 10 feet unless you want a dually. I personally like one with a dry bath just for convenience, and a slide was a must for me. If at all possible, store it under cover when not used. I've been able to find good quality campers used, and likely you could find a used truck as well, though I buy those new.
I just sold my 10-2000 after having it for 12 years. Wife's cancer prevented her from riding in the truck anymore or I would still have it. Well made camper. Only problem I ever had was the periodic leaks around the windows which required re-calking every couple years. They have an actual out of the factory door weight posted in the closet, but once you load them up for a trip you should figure another 1000 lbs. Nothing on that camper ever failed. I kept expecting it after so many years but nothing ever did. Had a fractured drain pipe in the grey water tank when I first bought it but called Keith the factory owner and he said bring it up and we will fix it so we drove to Kelowna and he put a crew on it for an afternoon and everything got taken care of with no complaints. Worked in a months vacation while I was at it. We camped in that camper in temperatures as low as 11 below and at the end the water pump finally froze but if I had insulated the pump compartment that would have never happened. A truly great camper.
