Default I Hate Sharks

I don't really hate sharks, but I did yesterday. After having fun with Silvers (like everyone else) out of Depoe, we left for the Chicken Ranch, arriving there at 1:30ish. Once there, we found 63 degree water and blue sharks in abundance. On my first drop, the line stopped dropping about 100 ft short of the bottom. Getting a 16/0 circle hook out of the maw of a cranky 7 ft blue shark is more adventure than I needed. We managed to get our gear to the bottom often enough to keep fishing and eventually we put a 35 inch halibut in the boat. We felt lucky to get it. Just before we left, around 4:00, we hooked up again. By the time this fish was within 100 ft of the surface we had the harpoon out awaiting what we expected was a monster halibut. But it turned, the line pulling, rod tight to the gunnel, runs were shark aided. As the 41 inch halibut came into sight there was a large blue shark locked onto it, in the process of taking a large bite out of my (our) fish). I don't hate sharks - but I did right then.
I've never shared a meal with a shark before, but I will soon.

It's a crying shame that you have to put that on your tag.
I had the same thing happen to me before but luckily it was an arrow tooth flounder. I just let the sharks eat all they wanted and took what little of the meat and head that was left in and gave it to the fish checker.
The look on her face was priceless

I generally admire sharks as graceful apex predators but my distaste for them while fishing is because they ruin tuna bait stops and late-season all-depth halibut trips. It's not uncommon for them to move into the Chicken Ranch when the water warms up but usually they just make it difficult to get bait to the bottom. Yesterday, besides taking nearly half of my halibut one even hit a 2 lb lead weight on the way down. That's got to feel heavy in the stomach.

We got about a four footer on the banana today. Yes, getting a circle out of their mouth is interesting. One of the black cod we hauled up had tooth marks on it as well. Last weekend we had a blue strip a long leader rock fish off on the way up. It ended up cutting the rig in two between the hooks and getting the hook stuck in its pectoral fin. That happened about 20ft below the boat. We could look down and see that thing swimming around with the hook in its fin. It did not seem happy to have to drag a 2lb cannon ball and 30ft of line around. They are cool to see out there though.

Those big blues were still at The Ranch today!

I did hook into a Salmon Shark that really put up a fight halfway down, wish I could have landed it...

They have their charm, don't they -- except when they want YOUR fish.
Used to catch dogfish and leopard sharks in Humboldt Bay when in high school in Arcata, CA.

We had one circling the boat out at the Thumb. Had him on for a second when he went for the bait on the way up. Watched him eat an orange fish that was floating around out there. Also had a sea lion come over and take a look. He looked like he was putting on a circus show for hand outs. But left when none came.

Great photo AndyCoho.

One of the other cool things out there this time of year is the number of Albatross that will gather around the boat waiting to be feed. I counted around 17 behind our boat on Friday. I haven't had one take fish out of my hand yet but nearly so. They have a knack for moving out of the way just as a shark tries to bite at their feet. They are an impressive bird.

i would love to see an albatross in oregon. they are very rare any place. the only place i saw them was nesting in new zealand on the south island.

they may soon become extinct from eating plastics in the ocean or where many nest on a volcano in japan if it ever blows.

we had literally around 50 around us on the halibut opener this year, and several on other trips.... most I have ever seen at once.... very cool birds!

as for blue sharks, they can certainly be an inconvenience, but there are plenty of those fishing anywhere, and if i'm gonna be inconvenienced, they are one of the coolest fish that swims.

on the shark subject an cool fish, a couple days ago on an afternoon bottom fishing trip, we got a visit from the very coolest fish that swims we followed a white shark around for about 15-20 minutes and got several very good looks, some cool pics and video..... only the second personal experience seeing them here in Oregon..... i'm still excited about that encounter, such a bad *** critter!

Of the two critters I've never seen in the wild but want to - killer whales and white sharks are pretty high on the list. I got to check off a wolverine a few years back in Alaska, that was pretty cool.

We took inventory last weekend, 35 sitting on the water around the boat. Black Footed Albatross I believe they are. They would get so close to the boat like they had no fear at all.

With all this Shark talk I wanna know has anyone ever kept one to eat or am I the only jack a$$ that does that. Just wondering cuz they are super easy to catch and if I knew a good recipe I’d be willing to try it again. But since I don’t I’ll just catch and release all my SHARK

Just like everything else there’s good and bad about sharks some of them eat really well they’re all very curious blue sharks or a bait eater primarily I believe and are a good indicator. Overall sharks are a very good indicator of a healthy ecosystem. everything has two sides

Short tailed albatross. Apparently very very rare off our coast.

Exclamation Re: I Hate Sharks

I wanted to share our encounter with a Thresher shark two weeks ago. I wish we could have got the experience on camera. Myself and two crew were fishing Coho west of the CR buoy. We were in the middle of a decent Coho bit and had a fish on the starboard rod. I turned the nose of the boat into the fish so I could keep the other two lines in the water. After 10 seconds of being hooked, the Coho began to run at the boat and the guy on the rod is reeling as fast as he can. Just as his spreader cleared the water, a Thresher shark broke water 5 feet from the boat with the Coho in his mouth. The shark was completely airborne and missed the front of my boat on re-entry by a few inches.

It was one of those WT??? moments. Took all three of us a few minutes to process what just happened. I have dove with lots of sharks and seen a few Threshers and this dude was big. I put the length (not counting the tail) at nearly 10 feet with a huge tail. It had some massive shoulders.

One other boat saw the episode and came by to tell us he had never seen anything like that.

Cool experience, just wish I could have gotten video or a photo to share.

Too many years ago to remember even where or what type - may have been somewhere in the Carribean - I had shark at a restaurant. Yes, very much like swordfish, or marlin. Yum.
