Gene... I bought FAR more green label herring than I used last year. It is vacupacked but a recent thread on I fish exposed a possible issue; the "old stuff" becomes bait the fish don't touch/like/bite.

I usually cut and brine mine for Springers and I do know they are VERY finicky about presentation. Will last years herring CATCH Springers?

What is your opinion on this?

Our bait is about as fresh as frozen gets, but everything that is frozen breaks down the oil in the product and over time smells fishy and than freezer burns. Our Springers in the salt water are not as finicky as the fish up river. If it was me , I would fish them. Thanks Gene

I usually cut plug and brine mine hoping to mask the frozen smell. If the packages are still tight and eyes are still clear I have to assume they're still good for the troll. The rest will go to ocean fishing, bottom fish or crab bait.

Thanks.
