Default Big fish weekend

I love it when halibut season goes into July we got three small fish this weekend under 40 inches all other fish were 47 to 55 inches. Always a pleasure when the season extends into July when the big fish show up in numbers I detest the back to back week after week Halibut in May it’s ridiculous.

We picked up 2 nice big halibut on Thursday, 44" and a 46" at the N end of the pile. Not long but they had some weight to them, healthy fish.Took Friday off to rest back and went out Saturday. Picked up a 34" right off at the N end and then a boat came by trolling said the Thumb was hot so we took off after the Golden Goose. Hour later we were floating with a few boats around us not like days of old on the Thumb. We dropped down and started tapping on gravel or that's what we thought. 2 hours later for a bait check and there is the smallest Yellow Eye stuck to my buddy's and my bait, one each. One rod fishing with our other friend for 2 hours. So we were not fishing. Never felt the fish or any idea he was there. As we worked to descend them a big blue shark came along and ate half of one of the little guys the other went descended OK. Big bone head mistake and one to remember so I never do that again. Bait check, bait check.

Very happy with my 2 day catch. Nice chunky and frisky fish. 44 and 47 inches, perfect size for me. Tough fishing, but persistents paid off.
Best part of the trip was remembering the Sea Beast rides much better when properly trimmed out.

We were on the thumb on Friday and picked up a 38 and a 50 that was the derby winner that day!
The 50 was the thickest one I have ever seen
Very healthy

I know of bigger fish that day , but you got to play to win.

Friday I landed a 53" according to the odfw checker. Like you said...gotta play to win! Opted to not play again on Saturday and we got another 51"ish. We had a great weekend with 11 halibut landed on the Miss D.

I was out on Friday and got a 53" also. The thing was such a good fight I didn't think it was a halibut until we finally saw it.
