Default scammed. maybe?

Here's a new one to us.
Wifey's daughter and hubby just put their refurbished casa on Zillow, for sale.
Someone went by and scoped it out and took pix of the outside and limited pix through the windows.
Then advertised it for rent at an excellent price. Just send $$ for applications with earnest money, and 1st and last etc, to a certain PO box somewhere in Texas. This was posted on Craigslist.
Luckily wifey's daughter was there doing last minute detailing work, when bunches of people started showing up to scope out the house. Wanting to look through the interior as they were told to on CL, on the 4th of July.
Wifey's daughter and hubby had already gotten a down payment, to sell the place.
Don't know how much the miscreant got sent to the PO box. The offer on CL apparently went off the list today.
Wifey's daughter's hubby is an IT for a big outfit, and cancelled the ad on CL.
And left a note on the front door of the nearly sold house, To that affect.
Hopefully, not too many people got burnt on that little scam, and the powers that be, can track down this low life.
Be aware out there folks.

Oh Geeze! Have your wife's SIL put up a sign inside a window saying "Not For Rent"... I hope the SIL can find the computer i.d. to the guy who posted for rent on Crooks List.

It will be a throw-away email account, like the PO Box.

Report it to the police and USPS, then go on about your life. It isn’t her job to catch the person scamming others.

I’m shocked by the number of people who would send money before getting an in-person tour of the property.

Sad part is almost everything we do electronically is used for no good. Placing ads on any media is asking for possible trouble. As shanem states unless doing business in person for unverified ads and not seeing first hand is setting yourself up for potential loses. Those are the kind of people that keep these A holes going. As the saying goes. "You can't fix stupid".

I saw this on the Portland news a few years back where people even had a key to the house mailed to them after making the first, last and security deposit on a home rental. The realtor doing a show was the one who discovered the new renters. Never saw a followup story as to what happened, sad for everyone and mess to untangle.

My wife and I were shopping for a place a couple months before we got married and while looking at a house we found out it was for sale and for rent at the same time. The realtor showing the house didn't know about the rent thing which is why we were there. When we discovered it was for sale, we bought it.

At an excellent rent price huh??? Hmmmmmm... didn’t everyone’s parents tell them” if it sounds too good to be true, it probably, most likely isn’t”

I would of payed a months worth of salary to catch that guy/gal on my property taking pictures of my house.. citizens arrest at the minimum...

I used to work with a couple of younger guys who rented a house in NoPo. It was a nice little house and seemed like a really good deal. The landlord insisted on cash for the rent, and he would always stop by in person to collect it. They said he was a good landlord, a nice guy and he was always prompt and diligent about fixing anything that went wrong with the house.
There was just one little detail- he wasn't the landlord. After a few months the real landlord/owner suddenly stopped by, and expecting an unoccupied house, was a bit surprised and indignant that he had "tenants" that he didn't know about. Oopsie.

1pump: That reminds me of a story I read about several years ago. Happened in London I think.

There was this small paved lot in downtown that wasn't being used for anything so this guy put up a nice toll booth and turned it into a parking lot. The city never questioned it as it looked official. He ran it for many years and one day retired. It wasn't till he retired that anyone found about his scam because when the parking lot closed, folks went to the city and asked why. The city said they didn't have a parking lot there but people insisted they did.

Yup. Some pretty slick operators out there.
They already have a down payment on the house from new owners. So all is well.
Also there is a sign on the door that it is pending sale and not for rent.
Cops and realtors, and a few others are looking for the culprit.
But probably not gonna get much success.
Like someone above mentioned, it was well thought out and the PO box is probably a no go, along with the e-male address.
They probably won't even get any prints off the PO box.
Seems like that since it a is across state lines type of deal, it should be a federal offense.
Plus it involves USPS. Double whammy.
