Default 1st Columbia river walleye

Melissa and I decided to try chasing walleye today. This was the first time I’ve chased walleye in 25 years since I was back east. We managed 3 fish (2 - 18”, 1 14”) and release a 14” whitefish. This was Melissa’s first ever walleye. She’s never eaten them either so she’s in a for a huge treat. :-)

water temp 55, only 8 other boats out there in the morning and by 10a it thinned out to 4 boats.

Nicely done! Good looking walleyes. I need to get my butt back out that way and do some walleye fishing this year. Skipped last year and I miss it.

Forgot to ask - jigging, trolling plugs or trolling worm harnesses if you willing to share.

Trolling worm harnesses. Will probably try some jogging next time.

I’m really interested getting into this fishery. I heard as far the “fight” a boot puts a up a better one than a walleye but I’ve heard they taste amazing. My only problem is I have no clue as a starting point to start learning. I have two Okuma Walleye Rods with line counters and a few worm harness but after that I’m clueless. Any pointers on place(s) in the Lower Columbia that could be good learning areas? I don’t want someone’s “secret” hole or anything. Just area that would show the structure I’m looking for and maybe some trolling techniques is all.

The initial grab and beginning of the fight is pretty good then they seem to say ‘f***-it I give up’ and just swim up to the boat. Lol. There’s a ton of good videos on YouTube if you search ‘Columbia River walleye’ including a few AnglerWest videos that have a ton of info.

Way to go shanem!
