Default Prineville Res

So, I live in Bend and with the mild winter we have been having I have been wanting to get out to Prineville Res for some winter trout fishing. Powderhouse Cove is by far the nearest ramp. I decided to just take a drive (no boat) out there, check the ramp, check some campgrounds below the dam and swing through Redmond to check on a chainsaw price. Low and behold, even though the state park website has said all winter that the ramp is open there was a gate across it. Called the phone# for the park and left a message with "Mike" looking for clarification about the situation (as in when the ramp will open). No reply yet (it is Saturday, so maybe a reply on Monday. Anyway, unles you are shore fishing, don't go. Here's a link to the state park.

According to the hydromet website the water level is like a half foot below the end of the powderhouse ramp. Could you tell when you were there? Hoping with this rain and warmer temps the lake may come up a little bit. If we get enough water I will be banging on them to get that launch open. It has never been gated off in the past winters.

Looks like they updated the website to reflect the current closure. I found out through a friend that the ramp had only been closed for a few days when I was there, so the state park is trying to stay current.
Hopefully the level goes up soon and we can launch.

Talked with the head park ranger and he is hoping to have the gate at the powder house open to the boat ramp by next weekend. Dock will not be in until sometime in May. Dock is designed to follow a receding lake level down, but not to track a rise in water level. So they try to install once lake is mostly full for the year.

I'll be happy to just see the ramp gate open. Lake is at 62%, so while low they did not close the ramp until the level went below 58%. I have a jet and f-350 4x4. Low water is not much of a problem.

When I spoke with him he said someone complained this year because they tried to launch at low water and messed up their props on the rock at the end of the ramp. That is why they put the gate up. I told him BS, ramp is use at your own risk.

Drove out to Powder house cove to check out the ramp conditions last night and run the dog around. The gates are still locked and dock high and dry. The end of the ramp is not visible below the water at least 10'-12' down. Truly unfortunate that the state spent the money on a ramp that's not usable by a population base off 100000 ppl at least 6 months out of the year.

The ramp should have been move east to the small bay it wouldn't have been nearly as steep and they could have ran the ramp quite a bit deeper they also should have boarding docks available separate from the ramp since the engineer failed to plan for the use of the ramp dock on a rising reservoir level.

Sucks having the ramp 15 minutes from my house and not usable with my boat most of the year frustrating to say the least. I put a couple links to the state parks and Oregon state marine board I sent a few emails with my thoughts will it change anything probably not but it cant hurt.

The ramp looks quite usable. Call the contact number on the Prineville State Park website and politely ask them to unlock the gate.

You won't get the dock so don't ask. But please do call and ask to unlock the gates. I was launching at a lower level than this back in October with no problems and I have a cumbersome glass boat

Made it out to Powderhouse Cove yesterday and the gate was open and water was up some. I have a jet so no problem. Prop is doable but use caution. No dock. Air temp was 35deg when I got there at 9:00 and 36deg at 11:00 when I left. Water was 38.3deg. Mostly just wanted to run the boat, but made one trolling pass from Bear Creek Arm to Bowmen Dam. Hooked 3, but only landed 1. About 14in rainbow. Water was surprizingly clear for Prineville. All fish were hooked on an f7 Rapala in Rainbow trout pattern. I was the only rig in the parking lot the whole time.

Went again today. Got there a little early for me. 8:30. Three trailers there. Weather report said mid 60's. Of course here in Central Oregon that "high" is between 2&3 o'clock. Wind was up a little and cold as heck. Trolled 2hrs for 5 hook-ups with 3 landed. Of course when I was leaving the hogh overcast left, as did the wind. It was beautiful and warm leaving the boat ramp.

Made it to Prineville again today (fourth trip). Water was 42degrees so warming a little. Sunny but breezy and cold at 8:30. I was 2nd boat in the water. About 10 trailers when I left around 11:00. Passed a few others headed that way on my way home. Landed 4 and lost one trolling f7 rapalas. Nothing better to do with the virus shutting everything down. Fun day.

All cookie cutter, maybe 12". So far this season 1-16in (biggest) 1-10in (smallest) all others in the 12in range. Last spring I got 2-18in on the same day, but not this year. Only been using the Rapalas. I have a two rod permit and I run one in "flame orange" and one in "rainbow trout". Seems like on one trip all the hits are on one color, next trip all on the other.

So now I see all the state parks are closing, including parking lots. Powderhouse cove going to get locked? Billy Chinook getting locked? A buddy was out to South Twin the other day and said no problem to tow a small boat out there. Guess I better get the 12 footer ready to go. Might be able to get to Big Lava. (if not now maybe in a week or two). Got to work Mon/Tues but maybe I'll take a drive out that way mid week.

Not sure if the Crescent lake resort Cam is as live as they claim, but might be a good time to fish it

I think that picture is the same one that they have had for about 6 months. Still is a good idea though. At least I would have a chance at getting skunked by the big ones.

Was just complaining about this whe I heard it. We were out Friday afternoon. Didn’t have as good of luck on the trout. Only landed 1 and lost three. But super bummed if they do lock that gate.
