Default Fuel filter with clear bowl legal with coast guard?

Have anyone checked with coast guard to see if the fuel filters with clear bowl on bottom past inspection. Hard for me to believe they do as the bowl could break or crack and leak fuel.

Last time I checked it is as long as it's not mounted inside the compartment of an inboard.

I have one mounted under a gunnel and shielded with a poly carbonate guard. I have had several CG boarding inspections over the years and it has never been mentioned. I understand the inspection is much more thorough if they give assistance and tow your boat to dock for you, so they might find a problem with it in that case.

What Quiet Riot said.

The clear bowl filters are intended for use with outboard motors, or to be mounted externally in a open area.

For inboard motors where there is a potential for the engine to start a fire in an enclosed compartment, Racor makes a version of the filter with a solid metal bowl that is not transparent. The boxes on the respective filters have the application information and disclaimers on them.

If the clear filters are not Coast Guard approved, someone should tell the maintenance guys who install them on Coast Guard RIBs

If you should choose install a Racor filter with a clear bowl, note that there is a slim chance of pulling the clear bowl at sea should you need to replace the filter element. Removing the clear bowl usually involves a vice or other means of clamping to separate the two. I use a Racor S3220SUL 2 micron filter. Carry a standard filter as a spare.
