Default Coast Guard rescue in Newport this evening

I was cleaning up after dinner about 8:30 at our family beach house in Surfland (about 2.5 miles South of the South Jetty) and noticed a coast guard helicopter flying really low and doing what appeared to be a grid search. I went out on the back deck to watch and about 5 minutes later someone popped a flare pretty close to the second can. The helicopter turned back to the flare and a couple minutes later a cutter that had been sitting with it's running lights off at the 1st can motored over. Using binoculars and a cheap spotting scope we could never could see the boat, I figured it must have sunk by that point. There appeared to be an oil slick on the water but it was hard to tell in the fading light. I saw a least two people go up in the basket. The flare lasted about 15 minutes. The cutter and the helicopter continue to search the area South of there.

The ocean is like a lake this evening, there was quite a few boats of all sizes fishing out near the 2nd can all day.

Didn't see anything on the local news. Except the capsized crabber back in Jan. of this year.

Maybe they were rescuing a sea lion off the buoy?

I heard something on the news about a kayak floating in the ocean that triggered a search event...not sure if this is related or not?
