Default "I love how you're living"

I was sitting on my boat at the South Beach marina, late in the afternoon. The ocean was flat and still no wind. I was recollecting my weekend. My son and I had just taken a tour of the halibut grounds. We had never been halibut fishing before, but the weather was so nice that we felt that we could check them out, even in our little 20' tin can. We hit the South rockpile. Lots of boats and not really knowing where to fit in ...we tried it a bit and then got the urge to find the "boot". The ocean was a comfortable 30mph. A few times I had to throttle back when I found myself doing more than 40. A half an hour or so and we were on it ...except, only one boat in the distance; and he was trolling? We set up a few drifts; released a little one. Then we went over to the other boat. They said that the halibut bite was slow so they were picking off a few coho that had congregated... Coho? No way! We could get those nearshore. This was our great adventure and we were fishing for halibut! Ocean was still flat, so off to the Chicken Ranch. It was easier to find as there was a proverbial floatilla of fisherman out there. We checked out the drift and got in with the crowd. Except, we didn't realize how deep we were actually going to need to go. We were using our bottom fishing rods and 3# weights. We payed out almost all our line and still couldn't keep the bait on the bottom! Lesson learned... so where are those coho anyway? Back to Seal Rock and put away 4 nice hatchery in 20 mins and then back dockside.

My kid had left to his family obligations. I was kinda hungry and laid the BBQ on the transom. ...started grilling a steak with garlic and thick chunks of onion; glass of wine in hand. I was thinking about how I was behind at work ...and the projects I needed to finish at home ...the stress of a big financial decision ... it was then I saw the tuna boat docking behind me. I thought to myself, "now that'd be the life"! The skipper was sorting fish and organizing his crew. He walked right by me, but he seemed stressed/ preoccupied. Then he stopped, looked right at me and said "man I love how you're living".

Right then I stopped my train of negative thoughts and realized that I was truly thankful of the day that I had experienced. I thought to myself that it wasn't too late in the day for one more ride. ...I cast off and motored North to the lighthouse, turned off the engine and listened to the sounds of life all around me... watched the sunset, all the while thinking to myself: "Man, I really love how I'm living".

Sometimes you just need a little reminding.

I love how you’re livin’ too. Me too. It’s been a great Summer. Things are working and fish are starting to show in the river. The next 8-9 weeks should improve even more.

Bingo and his side kick and lab at heart “Boo-Boo” enjoy walking on the trails my wife and I have been building this year - our goal to better access what we have and to use it more.

NWPinot: I love spontaneous solo boat rides in the winter on the Columbia.
Often it’s a mirror for as far as you can see.

As Sheryl Crow sang:

Cheers.

Great perspective.
Very well written!
I'm grateful to have what I have. Modest life, modest income, great family.
A couple of years ago I was talking to a friend of mine. ,He has more money than anyone I know. His list goes on and on. I don't know how he got it all. Ten years we've known each other he hasn't had a job or owned a business, so his time isn't obligated, although everytime I get hold of him he is always "SO BUSY". Managing money? I think. Making deals, buying and selling property, investments...… I don't know.
One afternoon I mentioned to him, "Only if I had half of what you had"....
His reply was everyone thinks like that. He has friends that he feels that way about and then there is a someone wishing the same for themselves of your position.
Honestly that statement took a couple of days to sink into my head.
Doesn't change anything about my modest position but I now have the virtue of seeing what's going on around me.
