Default Otis cafe

Statesman Journal.
Otis cafe to re-open (maybe by mid summer?), and also open a new location in Taft.

A long time ago relatives on my wife's side supposedly ran a still and illegal hooch operation in Otis Junction. Anybody know anything about that? My wife and her sister would love to hear anything of that history.

Fishfeet,

Family legend has it that they wanted nothing to do with the revenuers so I think that would be a dry hole.
There were also family stories of Prohibition, Canadian Whiskey boat loads washing ashore and family folks loading up the hooch on the beach in the night and having wild celebrations.

Actually the FBI will have a record of them if ever arrested. My dad’s family ran a still in western Nebraska and he got arrested when he was 17. I found out about it when he commented on it when he was investigated for employment at UC Berkeley. Did not stop him being employed. So that would have been 1930 for the arrest. My mom said they were their own best customers. He said they also imported 190 proof alcohol from Canada and mixed it to 80 proof and added some molasses for color and taste and a little olive oil. Said it was on a par with bonded hooch.

Never any open seats and people were ridiculously rude....Once Lincoln City became Coastal Portland....

But 15 years ago, what an awesome place and super good food!

I'm hoping for a non-tourist location....

Hope they have a sign in sheet for your place in line to be seated. They didn't before and when its packed outside to get in, people dont ask who was first and just go in.. yeah, I can see where the rude people would just cut in line.

My ex hysband used to chef there back in my early married days. We enjoyed it so much! We lived on the salmon river.
Love their Swedish potatoes!

Used to do a lot of fishing just up river from there way back when.
45 and 50 pound nooks weren't uncommon back then.

Never got to stop and play there.
Parents always kept driving right on by, like they couldn't hear us 4 rowdy boys yelling from the back seat.
But the beach was near, so it was soon forgotten, till the trip back.

Your parents likely had 2 choices

1. Tune out the kids

Or

2. Check into an asylum

4 of us kids growing up as well

My parents self quarantined themselves to an asylum at an early age.
Us 4 older boys turned out ok. (so far).
Not sure about younger sis.
She married a minister.
