Default To grease or not to grease

I have heard both when it comes to Avet drags. What are your feelings?

All of the experts tell me to use Cal's drag grease for that "oh so slick" feeling. I'll be greasing all of my Avets come maintenance time after the Lead party.

I had the pleasure to fish and hang out with Alan Tani at the Ilwaco Tuna club in Aug. 2018. For two days he put on a clinic repairing and servicing reels. The Avet question came up several times because Avet says no, but Alan believes the drag needs to be cleaned and greased with a light coat of Cal's. He would wipe the drag material with a clean rag, apply Cal's with a toothbrush, work it in, and wipe excess with a clean rag...done.

He also stressed the importance of cleaning and greasing the bearings. Alan and his website are full of information of the care and feeding of your reels. https://alantani.com

My experience is the outer bearing will freeze up long before any wear on the greased or non greased drag becomes an issue.
