Default OLD - How to Post a Picture

This is the OLD picture posting tutorial ... The new tutorial is HERE.

Here's a step by step tutorial on picture uploads for the new PhotoPost software on Ifish. Don't be intimidated by the size of these instructions - it is simpler than it looks! Give it a try!

Begin by going to the Picture Galleries

Then click on the Upload link

Select the image you want to display. Start by clicking "browse"

Then click on the file name for your image. When it displays in the dialog box, you can click "Open" to upload a copy of your file to Ifish.

Scroll to the bottom of the next screen and click "Upload/Submit"

The default gallery is the one labelled with your moniker. You don't need to do anything to select it. You can also add a title and description at this time, but you don't need to. Then click "Process Files"

Your file is now on the Ifish system. Next you need to find your image file.

Start by clicking on this link, or the word "My Gallery" above on the upper left.

Find your Gallery. They're in alphabetical order.

Find the image you want to include in your post.

Copy the code from this box below your picture.

Then, return to the Discussion Forum, start your post and paste the code into the box. No need to use the Instant UBB Code function, that will result in extra code tags which will display in your post.

[b]Finish writing what you want to say. Then complete your post just as you normally would. You should now have a picture in your post...Like this!

<font color="red"> </font> <font color="red"> </font>

Do you know how to copy and paste?
To do so, highlight the area, or text that you want to copy with your mouse so that it is all colored out. Do this by a left click and hold, while draging your mouse over the area you want to copy.
While it is highlighted, or colored, right click on it. Make sure it stays colored.
Scroll down to "copy" and left click on Copy.

Now, go to the area in which you want that text to be pasted in. Left click in the area.
Now, right click in the area, and left click "Paste"

Wow! There it is! It's the handiest thing you'll ever learn in computing.

Now... You want those pictures in your post...
Easy!
Go to your uploaded picture, which is uploaded in the gallery, and click on it.
A menu will appear that will look something like this:

Poster: (Username) (see all of this user's photos)
Date: Fri Mar 26, 2004
Filesize: 38.9k, 48.6k
Dimensions: 480 x 640
Description: Two springers (15# &amp; 19#), caught 3-24-04, Garbage Hole
Keywords: Garbage Chrome!
UBBCode: [i mg]https://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/3089BobSpringers3_24a.JPG[/img]

You want to highlight the area after the heading UBBCode:

[i mg]https://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/medium/3089BobSpringers3_24a.JPG[/img]

Highlight this, by following the instructions above.

Copy it by following the directions above.

Now... Click on "Main Index" in the menu, on the Threads pages. It looks like this:

Main Index · Search · My Home · Who's Online · FAQ · User List · Calendar · Gallery · C

Find the post you want to reply to, or create a new post.

In the text area, "Paste" the code into the body of the message. Do NOT use the UBB instant code. Just right click, and paste what you copied into the text box.

Do not disturb this code. If you want to comment on it, start that on a new line!

I hope this helps!
You can practice, at this web site.

Default Re: NEW Picture Upload Tutorial

There are several ways to resize your image to allow it to upload. The uploader will not permit files greater than 200kb. The ideal size for an image file is between 20 and 40 KB.

Here are some tools to help resize a picture:

1 __________________

Microsoft Paint

Most Windows users have a copy of Paint. Open your image in Paint. Select "Image" "Attributes" and choose a size something like 5.5 inches wide and 4 inches tall (set "units" for inches). Click "OK", then save your image with a new file name that you will then upload to Ifish.net.

2 __________________

Irfanview

This is a free program. Download it from the link above. After installing the program on your computer, open the image you want to upload in Irfanview.

Click "Image" on the tool bar. Then click "resize/resample" on the pull down menu. Make sure "preserve aspect ratio" is selected at the bottom left, then type a number in the "Set new size" panel. Click "Pixels", then choose a number like 550 or 600 for the width. The height will be selected automatically. Save your file and it will be ready to upload.

3___________________

From Herring Impaired:

Heres a powertoy from Microsoft that makes resizing a photo as easy as right clicking on the file and selecting the new size in a dialog. The following link will get you to the page, and then just select ImageResizer.exe. Only caveat is they are only for Windows XP.
The smallest, 240 x 320 is usually more than adequate for Web pages.
Image Resizer and other powertoys.

Computer screens can't display all the information a computer file is capable of sending. See if you can get the files smaller ... the display of an image at 25K is no worse than one that's 150K. It still sounds like a file size image you're running into.

I'm sure I'm just missing something simple, but here's my question: Once I've uploaded a photo can I delete it from my gallery? I just uploaded one that I don't care to post (I just wanted to take myself through the process to see if I could do it)
Thanks!

Yes, below each photo in your gallery is a "delete" button for removing unwanted images. Make sure you're looking at the full sized image, not the thumbnail.

I would check first to make sure the file isn't too large .. it should be under 200K, but really doesn't need to be more than 25 or 30 K most of the time. I would then check to see that the file is .jpg or .gif ... sometimes there seems to be a problem with .jpeg format, so if it's .jpeg, try resaving it as .jpg before uploading it.

Everytime I select upload, I get kicked back to "page cannot be displayed" window. I would like to send some pic's from Japan while I am over here. Any suggestions? All security settings are correct on my laptop, and I have no other issues with different websites. I'm sure it is a simple fix, (just not for me). Thanks.

It has to be a .jpg or a .gif, it can't be any other file type. Or the picture is still too big.

Hi....Microsoft paint question for sizeing pics.

When I got to "Edit" then "Image" then "Attributes" then sellect a smaller size in inches then click "O.K." the pictures is just "chopped" to the size I pick. The picture is not shrunck down. It just chops to the uppper left corner of the picture. Is this what it does or am I missing something. thanks, Ken

Microsoft paint is a pain to use. If the image is distorted or trimmed, it's because you didn't get the resized dimensions correct. Irfanview and other programs give you the option of "preserving proportions" by selecting one dimension and letting the program determine the other.

"Back" is not something you should do ... retaining text was considered a security risk, so Microsoft "fixed" it. I would open two copies of your browser. Use one to get your pictures and the other to compose your post.

Good morning! I know that only a few folks will see this before it gets pushed down the board, so I'm going to pin this for a couple days in hopes that it will help some folks post pictures that don't display code in them.
I'll also leave a copy on Life in General.

You know when you see [image] tags on either side of a picture that is posted? Like this?
(Example below)

[image][/image]

It happens alot, and I can understand why. People are going to their gallery, uploading a picture, and copying the UBB code for the picture, beneath it.

This code is complete, ready to use, and does not require the use of Instant UBB code that is available underneath where you write your text. It is already pre coded.

All you need to do with that copied code from the gallery is simply paste it directly into the text box where you write your post, as is. If you will look at it, when you post it, it already contains completed [img]-[/img] tags.

The first code, [img] tells the program to start displaying an image. The [/img] tag tells the program to stop displaying the image. Same with [image] and [/image]. They work the same.

I'll post it here, so you can see, but I'll have to leave a space in it, so it doesn't display the pic.

Here it is:

[img ]https://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/100_0441.jpg[/img ]

Notice the tags surrounding the image location? (The image location begins with http)

Now, if you use the Instant UBB Code in addition to the precoded copied text availabe on the gallery, it will add [image] around it, also, so that the image/img tag is doubled.

Here is an example:

[image ][img ]https://www.ifish.net/gallery/data/500/100_0441.jpg[/img ][/image ]

Since you only need to tell the program one time that it is to display an image, it only uses one instance.

So, next time you post an image, if you've been having the extra code problem, just copy it and paste it directly into the text box.

I just went to the gallery and borrowed the picture above. It works with any picture!

If you are used to right clicking on pictures to grab the location, that is when you use the Instant UBB code, below. Anything that starts with "http", (which means hyper text transfer protocol) is the location of a picture (or a web page) and will need image tags around it, to display properly.

I know this is confusing. Bottom line? You don't need two sets of image tags. If you get extra code, hit the edit button and delete one set of image tags!

Hope this helps!

O.K. I deleted my cookies checked the remember me box and I still can't open two windows in IFISH to be able to post multiple pictures in a post. I can open two even three or four if they are different web sites. Is there something in internet options I need to change? I have Windows XP.

Ok, I've tried all the tricks mentioned above, changed format, installed the MS image resizer....nothing. When I try to upload, I still get the "Web page unavailable" notice. Is it me or is there a glitch in the new software?

:whazzup:I'm not trying to be critical, I just have a question. It has always seemed cumbersome at best and difficult at worst to get pictures into posts on ifish I've posted pix on other forums (i.e. craigslist classifieds) and it goes without a hitch and without the intermediate step of uploading to a gallery and inserting UBB code. The very same photos that I am trying to load here went into my craigslist ad with, literally, 3 clicks of the mouse. Is there a techincal reason why this is so? I admit I am not the most tech-savvy guy around.

It's usually as simple as you describe ... upload to the gallery and paste the link into your post. The reason for the gallery is because the code needs to be UBB compliant. CL uses HTML, which isn't as secure and doesn't permit the features which make this board more user friendly.

The two reasons people usually have problems are image size and image format. Make sure your using either jpg or gif. And make sure the image is reduced to about 25k. If you can't resize an image, feel free to e-mail it to me and I'll resize it for you.

Check the size of the file you're trying to upload. It doesn't need to be much more than 25K, but if it's over 200, it will give an error message.

Hi ya Pete,
I went as far as printing out the tutorial you posted about posting pics on IFish. Problem I'm having is when I hit the submit button I'm sent to a page that says "web page not responding". I checked my puter settings to make sure they corrosponded with what was necessary to download a pic and they are all right on. I have a pic of the truck that decided to drive way to far out on the surf on Del Ray beach and got washed away and of an awesome 58" diamond side I caught on Saturday on the Big C. I'm dying to share this and it's not working for some reason . Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sounds like your image file is larger than the maximum 200K allowed. Check the properties by right clicking on your image and then clicking "properties". Images on the internet don't need to be very big, since most monitors are only 72dpi - usually about 20 to 30k is big enough.

Resizing a picture using Irfanview

Often times you take a digital picture with you camera, and want to share it with others, or post it on ifish. However, your camera has taken a HUGE image, both in dimensions and file size. You realize you are going to need to re-size your picture, so it does not display so large on the screen.

This is where Irfanview helps out. First, you will need to download the program. It is not a large program, so it shouldn’t take too long. Get Irfanview from here:

Irfanview download

One you have it downloaded, install the program using all the default settings and install it in place you won’t lose it. I suggest leaving it on your desktop. The icon looks like this:

You will need to do a one-time set-up of the program so it knows how you want your pictures resized. It only takes a few minutes, and it will save these settings for future use.

Next, I suggest you create two new folders on your desktop. One will contain the original (large) pictures, then second will contain the resized pictures. I have this, and call the folders “pics in” and “pics out” To do this, right mouse click anywhere on your desktop and goto “new” then “folder” Then give them a name like I suggested.

Next, copy/paste, or click and drag into the “pics in” any and all digital images you wish to resize. Irfanview does batch resizing, so you can resize multiple pics at once. Once you have in all the images you wish to re-size, you are ready to open up the program.

Double click on the Irfanview icon. The program will look like this:

In the upper left of the window, click “file” and then scroll down to “Batch conversion/Rename” It will open up a new box.

The program now needs to know where to find the pictures that you want resized. At the top of the box, it says “Look in” and has a drop-down menu. Use this drop-down to locate your desktop and the “pics in” folder. Click on “pics in” and now the pictures files that you want resized will appear in the box below the drop-down.

Now, you are going to need to tell the program how you would like them resized. You will need to do a few steps to identify to the program how you want this accomplished.
First, click on the “browse” button on the Output directory. Look for the “pics out” folder on your desktop, and set that as your ouput directory.

Next, click on the “Batch conversion” button where it says “work as”

[image][/image]

Next, make sure that the “File Format” is: JPG – JPEG Format. Use the drop-down button if it is not already the default.

Next, click on the button that says “Use advanced options” and then click on the “set advanced options button”

[image][/image]

This opens up a new box that allows you to specify what size you want the pictures to be.

Next, click the “RESIZE” button. Then, scroll down to where it says "Set long side to" and type in 480 and click the "pixels" box. Also, click the box that says "preserve aspect ratio". Now click "OK".

[image][/image]

Now you are back in the box which shows the pictures you want resized. Double click the image(s) that you want resize. You will see some text appear to the left in the “input files box.

Once you have all the pictures that you want resized in the “Input files box”, then you are ready to instantly resize them. Click “Start”

The screen will flash some text for a few moments, then display a box showing it is done. It looks like this:

Exit out of the program and go look in your “pics out” folder. Your pictures will be right there- resized and ready for email and posting!

Don’t forget- you need only set up the advanced options ONE time. After that, it saves your settings. From then on, it only takes a minute or so to resize pictures.

Good luck!
