Default Astoria C&R gators with ifish's Kevin Newell[Astoria pics added]

Chrissy and I had a chance to film with Kevin Newell and his family in Astoria about a week ago now. Kevin, Lacy, and his father Bernie showed us a great time on the water we will not forget. What an amazing place to fish this is. The entire day we saw 0 other boats as far as the eye could see and the water was almost flat the whole time. Lacy is a great fisherwoman and was a big help to us in landing alot of chrissy's fish. She is clearly a great deckhand : ) Double and tripple hookups all day as well as 2 from the old stock. The fish down there are a nice clean white as if fresh from the ocean and man do they scrap!

Chrissy broke her biggest fish ever record 2 times and caught several nice keeper size fish but when hawgzilla came to play she declined an offer to take the rod......lol

What started out as a relaxing day took a turn to crazy gator action for hours

A tripple header, you can not see Bernie up in the bow fighting the 3rd fish. Kevin on the video camera. He had confidence that we could all handle our fish while he captured the moment of "crazy"

IM into a 7 footer here and he just flipped me the bird and took off again. What a fight for a salmon rod..

A fast 13 minute fight and he is kissed and released..

Can we say 10 footer? The agony that is hawgzilla..

Tag teaming the big boy was the best for his health and when Kevin thought he could turn the fish and get it done...NOT...Just look at the bend in the rod LOL...He has ALOT of confidence in us but even more for that salmon rod.

A head the size of a lawn mower..

Kevin's guess 10 feet along side his boat. A surprise that this is actually Lacy Newells first oversize? it was to me...Great job Lacy! less then 20 minutes with assistance by Bernie for the first 6 minutes. Released unharmed : )

Chrissy's turn again and her arms are getting tired..gosh dern that cerebral palsy...

Chrissy's biggest of the day and the one that broke her big fish record--again

Great day thanks to the Newell family.

I know this seems expected to say but listen to me....Book a trip with kevin for C&R gators or even keeper season and you will have the time of your life I promis. Kevin KNOWS his game period...I have fished gators my whole life all over the west coast and this was a trip that I want to repeat again for sure next year. We did not mind at all releasing such great fish to fight again some day. Kevins contact is posted in his threads on his personal ifish forum. He has a ton of great pics he just posted from the keeper season... well here this is the number I have for him, 360-430-2521.

I will be cutting a film from this day very soon that our familys feel is going to be great!!!

Thank you Kevin, Lacy, and Bernie for this day. Chrissy and I hope we fish again soon with you folks.

Kevin is definately on his game when it comes to the sturgeon. When I fished with him, I sucked in as much from the master as I could.

Kevin is definately a stand up guy and a great guide. Me and my uncle Harry had the pleasure of fishing drano with him earlier this year, and had a great day of company and fishing. We look forward to fishing with him in the future. Anybody looking for a guided fishing trip, needs to get a hold of kevin.

Congratulations on a great C&R sturgeon trip to the lower river. This is a great example of how great fishing is for sturgeon in July. I wonder why more people dont take advantage of it.

We fished above the bridge but from what Kevin tells me they can be above or below or in many places at once. Its not like we had the only pack of gators in the river passing by us. Just one of many groups im sure. I think also he may choose his locations based on how the boat will set up with the tide and how he wants to fish. Honestly we only fished in one spot the trip. Never moved lol.....

I realy want to do the film NOW! lol but I have 2 ahead of it...What I can tell you is that the next film to be released on the first Friday in Aug is off the hook! Nooker action and IM working on it right now. The upcoming film is called "Blood in the Boat" but the gator flick is going to be a bit later in the year : ( Hope you can wait

Pablo, I am not sure what loomis rod he was using but they seem to be able to take ALOT of pressure with braid lol, that rod you can see Kevin putting to the test had a 10 foot fish attached to the other end of it Laughs. He was actually checking to see if we had hooked a telephone pole and not a fish. I do not even think I could get my fly rods to arc like that !!! : )

The slow current of the astoria area [as opposed to Bonne] makes it ALOT easyer to get away with such gear.

Great post with a great guide and outdoor film company!! Catch & Release Sturgeon on the Lower Columbia is the untapped jewel of fishing in the Summer. Great weather most days, lots of action and a perfect place to take some one new to fishing. Kids and Families love these trips and offer a special adventure.

Again Great job Kevin & Crew, BTW Kevin's Wife is an outstanding High School Girls Basketball Coach!!

Lacy was telling us that she was to coach a game in Tenn, and Kevin was going so he could try catfishing in the missisippi river. Ive done that just out of New Orleans at Nottaway Plantation House and I am sure he will have fun exploring a great whiskerfish river. I told him to use whole chickens lol..Hope he takes a few pics

Thank you Val your very kind : )

The other nice thing about Astoria is that after you fish you can just enjoy the town and it's sights. There are many.

The Columbia docked at the tourist trap.

IM not sure what this old red building was or was used for but I have photographed it many times from many different angles on and off the water. I hope they preserve it because it realy adds to the cannery row feel of the area.

Gulls and Black Cormerants are everywhere.

We videotaped this cool ship from Up close for the film. From being in Kevins boat it was amazing how big it realy was. Kevin made the comment that just one link from the ships anchor chain would anchor his boat. You will see later : )

Looking twords the river mouth at the Astoira Megler

I think this is the Coast Guard building in the port of Astoria

Port of Astoria

Columbia River Maritime Museum, been in here? Cool place..

If you have not been to Astoria even just to check out the town you should : )

Have a good day!

We are hoping so ! She is ready for her first salmon now. I will be looking into getting her on a boat for coho near Astoria since it looks like the nook season goes to the nets this year...Maybe Tilla in Spet or Oct, not sure...We will see what opps present themselfs until then but im going to need to take her out with someone who is not realy going to cry if she looses a salmon. For that reason coho might be the best answer for this year but I do not know if we want to go out to bouy 10 on a rougher day because her balance is not real strong..

Another great thread. I can't believe you Chrissy, Lacey & Kevin were lucky enough not to have to pull anchor and move a few times during the day....
Hold it I'm sure it was not luck and it is knowing the river and the fish you are going after.
Looks like it was a great trip and you all had a great time.
Looking forward to seeing the video!!!

Tuna bellies should work good for the whiskers!

It is the belly of a tuna. They are very fatty. I have never tried one yet but have some frozen off the last batch of tuna waiting for the smoker.
