On my trip this year three guys tried chunking for a little while. I think one of them caught 1 fish and they went back to sardines.
Last year Chris put on a pretty good show fishing chunks in the middle of a sardine bite. I watched him hook 4 in pretty short order last year. He never got bit this year.
Our skipper was the only one to get bit on a chunk. He would go to the bow, let it over run line from the rod tip to his hand by the reel and constantly feed line and walk the line from bow to stern.
As you said never letting the spectra get tight.
In that way, the same as when we fish zombie bait for albies. An absolute dead drift which requires you to fish each rod. Not put them in a holder with a clicker on.
